https://youtu.be/ZW8e5anG-toKaddish TitkabbalThe Spanish and Portuguese tradition has created a sort of musical hallmark in uniquely applying one of the most widely used motifs for psalmody in the Sephardi world to the chanting of the Kaddish. This recording of the London version of Kaddish Titkabbal has a four part harmonic arrangement for the phrase ‘Kabbel Berachamim Ubratson Et Tefilatenu’ which is sung in response to the Hazzan’s ’Titkabbal’. This, I believe to be unique in the western Sephardi diaspora. Indeed, I have not heard a SATB version of this antiphon anywhere else in the world.A further characteristic, peculiar to the London congregation, is for the choir to provide harmonic support during chanting of this Kaddish, as indeed it does for many of the Hazzan’s recitative passages. What makes this subtle and musically gratifying treatment so unusual is that it is entirely organic, occurring without any need for the choirmaster to direct it. A situation, it seems to me, that can only arise when the music means more to those singing it than just the notes on the page. Please share
