Bevis Marks records question: “Forasteiros”? Am I correct in thinking that there seem to be two slightly different usages for this term in the Minutes of the Mahamad. In early years, before around 1720, it seems to mean “strangers”, that is Portuguese Sephardim physically in London, but not yet members of the congregation. This could be because they were trying to keep a low profile from the Inquisition spies or waiting for family members to escape. Later it seems to take on the meaning of “poor”, supplanted yet later by “stragglers” or “strugglers”. Is this a fair summation?
