I came across this 1658 Bayonne notary deed that I thought might be of interest to some. I believe that most of the Melhados that I have seen discussed here seem to have a North African origin. This deed deals with Antonio Lopes de Castro, who was an active merchant from St. Esprit. I noted that he is also called "dit (similar to aka I believe) Milladou" in the text and "Meilgado" in the summary at the end.
