https://youtu.be/Yr6bOqDbd34# Leshoni Bonanta | LondonR Shelomo Ibn Gabirol’s composition 'Leshoni Bonanta' is a poetic expression of our divinely endowed ability and need to call upon the Almighty in prayer. Not having any specific reference to either rain, wind or dew, this meteorologically neutral Piyyut constitutes a memorable feature of both Tikkun Geshem and Tikkun Tal.It is worthy of note that the Spanish and Portuguese rite may be the only tradition that has not fallen victim to an early printing error which has the opening words, and therefore, the title of the Piyyut, as ‘Leshoni Konanta’. This reading is mistaken for a number of reasons. The most obvious, perhaps, is that Gabirol uses the word ‘Konanta’ in the following strophe. And it is unlikely, given the elegance and sophistication of the piece, that the same word would be used twice in such close proximity. The melody here is based on the Hadida transcription published in London in 1906. Interestingly, it differs from the version printed half a century earlier in the Aguilar and de Sola anthology, “The Ancient Melodies of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews”, in one small, but significant, detail. In Hadida’s notation the second tone of each strophe is one half tone higher than that of de Sola-Aguilar, making it intuitively easier to sing. Please like and share.Mo’ed Tob!
