https://youtu.be/JFCHqcCAMGA# Hashkibenu | Morocco Across the Sephardi world, Hashkibenu on Shabbatot is invariably sung as a spirited congregational piece. A conspicuous exception to this practice is the London Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi community where it is chanted as a recitative by the Hazzan. In the New York Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue where it is sung by the congregation, it is for most of the year - dare I say it - to the wrong melody. A melody whose DNA is manifestly that of the Yamim Nora’im.In view of these considerations, the custodians of the musical repertoires of the London and New York communities might like to give some thought as to whether the melody in the present recording would make a worthy addition to their respective traditions. Of North African provenance, this lively tune is well established in France and has made inroads into the canon of the French Spanish and Portuguese rite.
