Indexing the Bassatine Cemetery in CairoDear Friends,You may be aware of the major Jewish Genealogy website Jewishge.org Among the many features it has is the JOWBR (Jewish Online Worldwide Burial registry)https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAgOefBhDgARIsAMhqXA4YB_ok363WwUtMNPRXaJ62zEbfFtVQW77sGzKfiGPEbuB3-0VoHikaAlomEALw_wcBIt has done a tremendous job of putting online the details of Jewish graves all over the world (Latin America, North America, The Caribbeans and of course Europe and South Africa). It covers many Sephardic and mixed cemeteries. All the data is extracted from cemeteries records and Hevra Kadisha surviving records. The case of Bassatine cemetery in Cairo is different because the burial records are not available and the physical state of the cemetery has deteriorated and most of the graves are not recognizable any more. The Egyptian authorities and several Jewish and international bodies are investing efforts to clean up the cemetery and recover the matzevot but it is not known how many of them will be fully recovered. The only memory or reference we have is YOU!!! If you have relatives buried there you may provide me the details: full name, maiden name, parents name, place of birth, date (year) of death and if you know the year of birth. I just opened an email address cairocemetery@gmail.com where you can post the data. This will enable me to fill an excel table and come back to you for questions and clarifications. Please DO NOT send it through Facebook. I am also available through messenger. I believe that it is one of the very few ways to commemorate your loved ones who are buried there. Let us try and see how it works.
