https://youtu.be/g2JjxGuOBL8# Hashem Melekh | New York In marked contrast to the recitative of the Zemirot itself, this distinctive and haunting melody used in Congregation Shearith Israel for Hashem Melekh on regular Shabbatot is set in a minor key. While having no cognate in the London Spanish and Portuguese repertoire, it is virtually identical to the chant used in the Snoge in Amsterdam. During my time at Shearith Israel, the singing of Hashem Melekh was customarily led by a senior member of the congregation, standing at his seat. The Shamas of that era, the venerable Judah Guedalia, would approach the gentleman in question just prior to his performance and administer - in soto voce - a brief precautionary tutorial in order to ensure that the appropriate melody for the day was flawlessly delivered. Please like and share, and if you haven’t already, please subscribe to my YouTube channel.
