FREI MARTINHO, or FRÈRE MARTIN: Converso, friar and spy - document from Portuguese Inquisition on him and his family, the Bom DiaIf anyone needs an interesting topic to study, here is one. As part of the "Gente de Nação Hebrea" documents related to New Christian fugitives in the early 1600s (see my post on that here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheSepardicDiaspora/posts/3467247986868151/), there is a letter from the town of Mértola that mentions the Bom Dia family, including one fascinating character, Frei Martinho, born ca. 1573, which appears to have been a very well-connected spy and a pioneer of the Jewish community in Rouen. Document (in Portuguese, from 1613-1614) here: https://digitarq.arquivos.pt/details?id=7738053Text on Frei Martinho's family begins in image 3, he is first mentioned halfway through image 4.Most definitely the same person as "Fra. Martin Lopes" mentioned by Cecil Roth, here: http://www.ferdinando.org.uk/the_marranos_of_rouen1.htmAnd also the same person mentioned here as "frère Martin de Saint-Esprit": https://www.cairn.info/revue-dix-septieme-siecle-2006-2-page-277.htm
