**JODEN SAVANNE - JEWISH SAVANNAH - SURINAM**This 17th century settlement on the Surinam River was created in large part by Sephardim from Brazil. There is a possibility that some of Itamaracá's Jewish Congregation moved here via Cayenne in 1645 when the Insurreição Pernambucana erupted. CORRECTION !!! Apparently the existence of the colony in the 1640s is a myth......Just received from Israel :- "Jewish settlement in Suriname did not begin until the 1660s. The 1640s myth is from the complete misreading of the date of Haham Isaac Meatob's ketubbah from his second marriage." ...... David Nassy arrived via Cayenne in 1664, with his wife Ribca Drago.. UNESCO states the earliest grave to be from 1667.
