Another mystery connection with the Cansino family, this time in New Mexico. Our common matches lead invariably to the couple formed by Cristóbal de Baca and Ana Ortiz. Cristóbal is said to have descended from a Juan de Vaca, from the Coronado expedition. The authorities were aware of the collusion between Jews and natives. A Juan de Baeza (also known as Juan de Baca) was prosecuted by the Inquisition in Mexico in 1540 for circumcising Indian friends with his fingernails for lack of proper instruments. A copy of the charge sheet still exists. It turns out that the Y-DNA of Baca´s male descendants is R-M269, the same as the Cansino´s haplogroup. I read, but cannot attest to its accuracy, that the Baca family was linked to the converso family Gutiérrez de la Caballería (Halevi).
