Synagogue in Port Royal, Jamaica, 1685While transcribing the earliest account books of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation, London, Jamaica has been mentioned a few times. The first references mention Abraham Baruh Alvarez, then there is a reference to the synagogue paying the passage to Jamaica for a Berber (from North Africa). Of special interest is the listing of two payments of 6d each for the carriage of a letter from the Kahal (Congregation) in Jamaica on 18 July 1685 and a few days later on the 13 August. Note: Dates computed from the Hebrew and Julian calendars mentioned in the accounts. Unfortunately, the content of the letters is not mentioned and history has shown the Synagogue was destroyed in the earthquake in 1692.[https://anacaohebraica.transkribus.eu/search?view=combined&f=1&t=Jamaica](https://anacaohebraica.transkribus.eu/search?view=combined&f=1&t=Jamaica)
