Lisbon Massacre of 1506 started at Largo de São Domingos...The Lisbon massacre (sometimes called the 1506 Easter Slaughter) took place in April 1506. During Easter of that year, a large crowd of Christians and foreign sailors, inspired by the Dominicans and by their own deeply-seated Jew-hatred, persecuted, tortured, killed, and burnt at the stake thousands of New Christians. This slaughter took place during the reign of King Manuel I, thirty years before the establishment of the Inquisition and nine years after the Jews were expelled in 1496 and forced to convert in 1497. Legally, there were no Jews at that time, not in Portugal, not in Lisbon. That “minor” detail did not matter… Read about this and many, many more stories in Irene Shaland’s new book “Shaland’s Lisbon: An Illustrated Guide to Jewish History and Sites in and around Lisbon.” Link to this book: [https://amzn.to/4awMblb](https://amzn.to/4awMblb)#lisboa #sephardic #sephardi #sephardiccommunity #iberia #jewish #jewishhistory #traveltoportugal #portuguesejews #jewsinportugal #pogrom #lisbonportugal #lisbonhistory
