This is the "Synagogue Portugaise" at Hovenierstraat in Antwerp. The Portuguese new-christians started to establish in Antwerp in the Sixteenth century. Famous Jews among them like Dona Beatriz de Luna ( Gracia Nasi) and her rich relatives, the famous phisician João Rodrigues de Castelo Branco known in Europe as Amato Lusitano or Amatus Lusitanus. Hundreds of portuguese and spanish Jews lived in the city but the politics (changing of rulers) Spaniards, Austrian, French and Dutch is the reason they only had secret synagogues. This was erected in 1898. They traded sugar and diamonds in general among others occupations. Most of them went to Amsterdam, Hamburg, Italy, Turkey and many other places. Part of them melted with the non-Jewish population.
