The unusual harsh winter weather in Amsterdam the last couple of days reminded me of a story I read in the notarial archives about Abraham Chamis. On New Year's Day 1653 Abraham Chamis came ice-skating from Ouderkerk a/d Amstel (maybe from Beth Haim, but it is not mentioned in the doc). It was already late and the gates were closed. He decided to look for a place to stay the night. He knocked on the door of Hilletje Jans, who apparently had a some sort of inn just outside the gate. He ate his meal over there, and paid for everything the next morning.Apparently some some rumors were spread about that night. Two months later Hilletje stated all the above, and that the accusation that Abraham had slept with a certain 'light woman' Anna were untrue.
