Hi! I'm new to this group. I recently joined because: My longing for this path to learn more about Rhodes and my Jewish heritage began with my childhood memories of my great-grandmother. I remember her braiding bread, lighting olive-oil lamps before dark on Fridays, and preparing spiced Greek dishes and desserts on special days. She used to tell me that the challah must “play hide-and-seek” under a cloth or it would “taste worse than medicine.” Later, my granny—her daughter—would hum the same unusual tune, telling stories of Spain, Rhodes, and a ship to Seattle, and of a friend who “disappeared onto the train.”Years later, I found that same rhythm again when I discovered Hazzan Isaac Azose’s SoundCloud recordings. The words were unfamiliar, but the rhythm and feeling were unmistakable—the same sound and spirit I had felt as a child beside my grandmother’s Shabbat candles.Although I have no documentation proving my family’s Jewish identity, my heart knows where it belongs.Thank you for allowing me to join your group.
