The grave of David Montezinos. He was librarian at Ets Haim for 50 years and added his own collection of books to the library in 1889. From that moment on the name of the library became Ets Haim – Livraria Montezinos. The cemetery of the Portuguese Jewish community, Beth Haim, or House of Life, is located in the small town of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, near Amsterdam. For almost four centuries, the community has been burying its members here. Many tombstones are in a bad state and the inscriptions are not readable anymore. Then the magic happens: by putting very fine sand into the letters of the inscriptions they become visible. Somewhere on the cemetery grounds, a ‘book’ was found which could not be traced back to a gravestone.
