“Jewish life in Morocco - Rabat - La Gueniza: This is the burial place of the old Hebrew books. The feast of the Gueniza is celebrated in our town approximately every two years. It consists of collecting all the old Torah books, filling them into small sacks of white cloth, sewing them in the form of pillows, and then burying them in the cemetery. The feast took place in Rabat on Sunday the 12th of Sivan 5687 (12 June 1927) under the patronage of the eminent Sheikh of the Hebra Gemilut Hasadim Mr. David Bohbot. That day, a whole procession, each with a Torah bag under their arm, made their way to the cemetery singing Piyutim. There, the entire Jewish population of Rabat and Salé were waiting, and, at the time of the funeral, everyone thronged to the tomb to embrace the Torahs so beloved. This ceremony was honored by the presence of Chief Rabbi Joseph Attar of the High Rabbinical Tribunal, Rabbi Yekotiel Berdugo, and his son, Rabbi Moses Benoualid, Rabbi David Sabbah, Mr. Abraham Nakam, President of the Israelite community etc. This beautiful ceremony ended at sunset.
