I would like to ask the group support in searching information about the jewish community of Oran, Algéria. I recently discovered that some serbian jews came in the end of 18th century from Oran to Belgrado and Sabac. Couldnt find more than some generic summaries but not a single kehila list. Tks

Mostly we don’t think about it, but a few of the great Synagogues of the Sephardim are not well known by their Hebrew name, like the ones in Amsterdam and in London. For any man who is Sephardic or suspects Sephardic heritage and who is interested in doing the YDNA, familytreedna is having a decent sale now. It is very helpful in establishing ancestry. Unfortunately, mostly Ashkenazim do these things and not enough Sephardim.
A thought. The other day I was looking for a recipe for tempura? I found a note that it was introduced to Japan in the 16th C by the Portuguese. Hmm that's around the time many Portuguese jews were fleeing Portugal for safety in foreign parts which for me at least raised questions, is there any evidence of Jewish presence in Japan? So I did a couple of googles looking for a reference to the rabbi ...

I stumbled onto this woman whose tombstone in San Francisco says she is from Curacao. In 1860 and 1870 she is living with an Esther L Dias, who I think may be her mother (but could be her sister, the ages vary on the census). One of the census entries says Rachel is from Barbados. She had a child born in Louisiana. My guess is that her birth name was Rachel Lopes Dias, but that's just a guess.ht...
