Keter Shem Tob on the custom of spilling wine during the makkoth. He explains how the custom came from Ashkenaz to Eres Israel, and in his time hadn't arrived in Amsterdam and London yet. (He was happy about it as he calls it a "hazaya")

I want to know more about the old traditions from places like Venice, Rome, Bordeaux, Jamaica, Panama, etc.Sometimes the discussions are too Amsterdam-London-NYC-centric IMHO.

Apparently I am not the right person to run this group. Ashley Perry and Uriel Milo do you want to take over?

Dear Hakhamim and Reverends and Mui Honrados Fregueses. I am working on a lecture about the historical, cultural and so on and so on differences between the (western) sephardic approach to judaism and the ashkenazi one (tosafotist in primis), where I want to get is to the implications on the differences of Pessiká. Could you suggest me a book or a comprehensive text that I could use?

Sorry to post another controversy here, but I feel like the issue needs to be dealt with if this group is going to move anywhere:The few WS communities that are left, are slowly disappearing. This is partly because of people adopting foreign customs *out of plain ignorance*. When I ask people why they do X in the Ashkenazi way, they have no answer......Then there is a small group of people who stu...

Small story. . . The caterer at my wedding this past Sunday was fascinated with the S&P birkat hamazon booklets we had. He told me that he had been part of a small S&P minyan that met in Brooklyn on Haggim for more than 20 years, before falling apart 10-15 years ago. Anyone know anything about this group?

I was there to attend a Limmud conference (can read more about that here: www.limmudinternational.org). Basically, these are gatherings to learn and teach about a host of Jewish topics...all in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.I had a chance to give a talk on "T...
