Olá, amigos. I'll be in Lisbon for a conference from October 18-25. I know Lisbon well, and am always delighted to meet new people. DM me if you like, and/or if you have any interesting events to suggest. 🙂

Friends in Lisbon - arriving at noon today for an international ethnomusicology conference - I won't have much time but dm me if you want to try to meet.
Hi, I'll be back in Portugal for the first time since 2019 - usually I'm there every year, doing research and fieldwork related to.Sephardic and to Crypto-Jewish (also regional Portuguese) music-related traditions. I'll be in Madrid next week, then Lisbon for an international ethnomusicology conference July 20-7, then probably Porto and Bragança for a few days; and likely Belmonte before Lisbon. I...
The great Haïm Vidal Séphiha, pioneer and passionate champion of Judeo-Spanish, has passed away, at 96. I first met him back in the 80s, when I was beginning my thesis. El gran Haïm Vidal Séphiha mos desho la buena vida, ke en Gan Eden este.
hi, a post was closed to comments yesterday after a longish series of one-word, often repeated replies. But I think there never really was a reply, despite one post having been suggested as "the" answer. The question was about the Sephardic equivalent of "yahrzeit". First, I think any response has to be plural: there is not one and one only term. Then, there is widespread usage, which may or may n...

Hi, a friend in the Spanish province of Palencia (north-ish-east) asked me about the local surname Cuena, which people say is from "Cohen". Any information on this? Thanks.
Of interest to those intrigued by Sephardic songs and their origins, here's athe first of the re-broadcast of a series I prepared for Radio Sefarad some years ago. I'm speaking in Spanish but the transcript might be helpful .
hi everyone! greetings from four of your most dedicated (though not necessarily everyone's favourite ;) ) list contributors, a first-time-all-together photo, at a conference on Jews in Portugal and the Spanish and Portuguese Diasporas, in Lisbon and Oporto. Thinking of you!
I may have missed someone posting this, but just in case. Wish one of you specialized scholars could afford to carry it off from auction if no relevant Jewish library is planning to (whether or not el Señor C. turns out to have been Jewish to any degree)..
Hello, just an information note. Gloria Mound has just passed away, in Israel. In the realm of scholarship, re Crypto-Jewish history and ethnography, and re the history of Jews in Ibiza, we disagreed often, but her sincerity and commitment were always clear, and she worked tirelessly, not stopping for ill health or advancing age.
Sunday March 6: LIMMUD 2016. My friend Suzanne Benchimol - originally from Meknès, Morocco - and I are presenting a programme together for the first time: "Moroccan Sephardic Life Cycle Customs and Songs." I'll be illustrating by singing relevant traditional songs, as Suzanne takes us through a traditional Moroccan Sephardic life cycle, with rare items from her family collection. There will be a c...
