The name Sepharrad - is it originally Jewish? I met some Persians who are Muslims with that name.
I had at one time a source describing the duties of the Hatanim at Shearith Israel. Beyond what's described in the Constitution (it's rather brief) it included the prescription to donate Rum among other things to the Congregation. I no longer recall the source. Any help in locating the information so I can best discharge my duties will be appreciated.
Professor Leibman spoke last week at Shearith Israel and apparently had time to visit our cemeteries.
Thought this might provisionally be of interest:
For all who are interested next Tuesday at Congregation Shearith Israel - The Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, Professor Laura Arnold Leibman author of Messianism, Secrecy, and Mysticism: A New Interpretation of Early American Jewish Life will speak on on Sarah Brandon Moses.
Note the gown with the black kippah. Can anyone identify from where those gowns originate?
Does anyone know anything about Solomon Franco who apparently lived in New Amsterdam in 1649, tried to move to Boston and was shipped off by the Puritans back to Holland? He was later meshumad and became an Anglican. He may lay claim to the first Jew in New York.
From Seforim Blog:Lest people think that when it comes to Sephardi-Ashkenazi relations it is only the latter who have behaved in an improper manner, let me quote some interesting historical tidbits from Zimmels, Ashkenazim and Sephardim, p. 62:In the year 1766 the Sephardi congregation in London passed a law forbidding a Sephardi to marry an Ashkenazith and stipulated that the wife or widow could ...

I had promised to post this earlier about the fate of the first 23 Jews in New Amsterdam.1. None of the original 23 nor Jacob Barsimon and Samuel Pietersen remained by the time the British captured New Amsterdam2. There is some doubt as to when Shearith Israel was founded. Likely After the British3. Others Portuguese did come soon after from Amsterdam and remained.
The Wimbledon champion Sexias,Has a service that's quite efficeixas,With incredible pace,He delivers his ace,While the rest of us murmur "good greixas"Vic Sexias the Wimbledon champion was denied for a time entrance to the Forrest Hills Lawn Tennis on account of his Jewishness. Normally the Western Sephardim were not subject to these types of discrimination. The famous building 740 Park Avenue whi...
Is there Sephardic term equivalent to mensch - Spanish, Ladino, Hebrew?
What do we know of this site -
Who else sees the implication of Western Sephard vs Yekkes in Germany's defeat of Brazil today? We can only hold out hope for the Dutch! If this were the Jewish Religion World Cup I guess Hungary would be playing Lithuania every year.
I thought this was an interesting analysis of the Castilian R. Yitshak Canpanton (or Campanton; 1360-1463) approach to learning in Darkhei ha-Talmud also called Ittun Tunisai. No link so the article follows from Feeblitz. In recent years, scholars have taken a renewed interest in elucidating the specific methods used to study Jewish texts in yeshivas, both past and present. For example, ...
