"While often read today as a romantic lyric, it was composed to be sung to a Sephardic tune formerly used for *Lecha Dodi*, the mystical hymn welcoming Shabbat. The overlay of a modern English love poem onto an ancient Hebrew liturgical melody exemplifies the Romantic longing for fusion between the sacred and the sensual, the historical and the contemporary, and Byron’s lyrics, in their simplicity...
This is a wonderful excursion into the richness of Sephardic life in Amsterdam, the power of AI, and perhaps the first instance of monthly Shabbat reading material being sent out on a monthly basis. Here's a great episode of Sforim Chatter on the Pre Ets Haim collection of Responsa. The library can be found here:https://peh.dicta.org.il/book/prietshaimThis is very much worth a listen. Special insp...
Interesting article about the names Silva and Costa in Brazil from the New York Times
This is another great episode of Sforim Chatter. This time, Professor Jonathan Schorsch discusses Antonio de Montezinos. He has some interesting commentary on Western Sephardim. De Montezinos (Aharon HaLevi) was a Portuguese converso who convinced Menaseh Ben Israel that he had discovered one of the lost tribes in Ecuador. He wrote *Esperança de Israel. *He appears to be an influence on Ben Israe...

Anyone have a perspective on this book?Every image we create is a mirror that reflects a way of seeing. We look at the world and at others in relation to ourselves, through our own mentality and attitude. Using a broad selection of works, this exhibition recreates a medieval mirror that shows how [Jews](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews) and *[conversos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Converso) *(...
I finally got a chance to listen to the last two segments on Seforim Chatter on Spanish Jewry. I very much appreciated Genie Milgrom's story of curiosity, determination, and catharsis upon her two journeys to Judaism. And I couldn't help but enjoy Genie's frequent Yiddishisms in Episode 19. Now I'm going to have to buy her books
Anyone here regularly attend Rue Buffault?

This wonderful episode on Shem Tov Gaugine features Roy Shasha on Seforim Chatter. I had no idea that Gaugine had semicha from Chaim Berlin or that Sephardic Jews did Tashlich, on Shabbat, no less. It's one of the highlights. I especially enjoyed Shasha's recollection of going to the Mizrachi Synagogue.

Benjamin R. Gampel is the author of Anti-Jewish Riots in the Crown of Aragon and the Royal Response, 1391–1392. I was exposed to his teaching in the Seforim Podcast I posted earlier. There are also a set of video lectures on the JTS Website that I've begun to watch. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRZkxypF05M&list=PL26FFB572AA027D1F'His book:==>[Anti-Jewish Riots in the Crown of Aragon and the R...
Not my style, but a key Western Sephardic contributor. "Oliveyra was born in Amsterdam to a Jewish family of Portuguese descent that had settled in the Dutch city, which was known for its climate of tolerance, after fleeing religious persecution. By his early 30s, he moved to London, where he and other Jewish artisans had become eligible for membership in professional guilds.""That was unusual. Je...
For those interested, the Seforim Podcast has had a number of Historians speaking about Spanish Jewry and the inquisitions over the last few weeks. There is much new information in these podcasts based on the records that were only uncovered in the last 30 years post Franco's death and the general opening of the archive. I'm particularly intrigued by the Inquisition in Castile and the dynamics of...
Zachary Edinger published a nice booklet honoring the 1728 Consecration of the Mill Street Synagogue including the contributors to that building and the communities from when they came. Lastly, he contacted some of their descendants.

Even when we pray outdoors we follow the customs. Former Parnas Alvin Deutch passed away so we drape the banco with black and include his top hat.
