The Sephardic Diaspora 14 February 2022 à 22:32

# Here's an interesting and largely forgotten historical character: Giovanni Batista Vantura aka. Jean-Baptiste Ventura (Buonavantura). Son of a Sephardi merchant from the Dutchy of Modena, he joined Napoleonic forces, and after the wars went to India where he helped modernize a Sikh army. He was made a General, a Supreme Judge, and a Governor of Lahor. He returned to Europe later in life. Was awa...

JewishGen just published a Sephardic database with 146,000 records. The collection includes records of Sephardic and other Jews from such countries as Algeria, Austria, Bulgaria, Balkan nations, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Spain, and Tunisia. There are also comprehensive records from Israel and the Holocaust. I believe one needs to register with JewishGen to access the r...

What were the laws concerning bearing of arms by Spanish and Portuguese community of Amsterdam in 17th Century? Did they take part in the night watch and militia service? Was carrying of sidearms customary as it was for Jews in Germanic States and in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth? Any community documents or rabbinic commentary pertaining to this subject?

Is there a searchable database for the Turkish communities? Jewish Gen only gives such databases for Eastern and Central Europe. Does an equivalent for Ottoman Empire exist?

A pretty controversial article published in NYT. Those folks should do a Y-DNA test to establish a solid proof of a relationship:

To the all-knowing people on this page. I wonder whether Honorable Devin Nunes has Converso origins. After all his ancestors came from Azores, and that surname... Any idea?

Probably doesn't mean much, but checked FTDNA this morning and saw a match with Solomon Passy, a Bulgarian Foreign minister, a dissident and inventor. His father was Isaac Passy, Bulgaria's foremost philosopher.

Pardon my ignorance, but I have a question concerning use of Latino by Spanish and Portuguese Nation in Amsterdam. People of S&P community were New Christians who returned to Judaism in 17th Century. From the 15th and through 17th Centuries, they were Christians and lived amongst the Christian population of Spain and Portugal. So they spoke the language of their respective countries. 200 years is ...

For any man who is Sephardic or suspects Sephardic heritage and who is interested in doing the YDNA, familytreedna is having a decent sale now. It is very helpful in establishing ancestry. Unfortunately, mostly Ashkenazim do these things and not enough Sephardim.

Hello all. It's an honor to join such an interesting group. I descend from a Lithuanian Jewish family. So, what am I doing here, on a Sephardic page? I am here due to DNA testing results and some old family legends. Here's a story of my research:In 2015 I took a Y37 test on FamilytreeDNA. Interestingly enough, amongst my matches there was a Mexican gentlemen named Parra. At the same time, I also m...
