“Not only are genealogies more than mere reflections of nature, they are also more than mere records of history. Rather than simply passively documenting who our ancestors were, they are the narratives we construct to actually MAKE them our ancestors. As such, they often entail deliberate manipulations as well as actual distortions of the historical realities they supposedly document. By selectivel...

Hi all,On my recent trip to Portugal, I met some fascinating historians, archeologists and others who provided valuable input regarding the Sephardic experience in Portugal pre-inquisition.Have any of you read this book? It is in Portuguese and it is available in the Guarda museum. In it, it has letters of contracts provided by Kings of Portugal and others to Jews. It has their names pre-inquis...

https://youtu.be/i79oRXFwlUIThere is no question that Sukkot in Israel has an atmosphere that can not be replicated anywhere else. This is more of a history question than anything else, although it does touch on one of the more unseemly points in our history, so let me know if I should repost to the debate. Roughly when did the exclusion of Coloured Sephardim start, and what was the state of the liturgy at that time?

Hi everyone, I wonder if anybody knows or have documented papers about the origins of Challa (Shabbat bread) made by Spanish/Portuguese Jews? Did western Sephardim made "brided" bread? Is that an S/P tradition? The form given to the bread?

I have written here before about Dotar, the charity in Amsterdam that gave away dowries to orphan girls and young ladies of Iberian descent, so that they would marry into the Sephardic community. Each year a list of candidates was drawn up, then a lottery was held on Purim, and the winner got a dowry. All these yearly lists of candidates have been preserved, and over the period 1615-1886 they can ...

Hi, I have a question, sorry the context will take some review. My 4th great grandmother was the mulatto daughter (freed) of a slave. Such persons getting baptized afforded them a boost in society at the time. So it was important for her and for her children. My grandfather was an elder in the synagogue and remain so until near his death at 77yrs in 1862, I have found this from a few of the pu...
