Hello everyone,I found these marriage records in the Netherlands archives and wondered whether you can confirm if I have gleamed the right information out of them (unfortunately, I cannot speak Dutch). I believe these reflect the marriages of Isaac de Rehuel Cohen Lobato y Israel Ricardo (1767-1838) to sisters Jeudith (1785-1823) and Ester (1779-1814) de Isaac Saruco y Lopes Cardoso. It appears t...
Entertaining diversion about tennis champ Rafael Nadal Parera: one more myth about who is supposed to be a converso...“Rafa,” as Nadal is affectionately called (and the Rafa name appears everywhere at the US Open at souvenir shirts and souvenir stands), is known more formally as Rafael Nadal Parera. This “Parera” name has led to speculation in recent months that Nadal may have Jewish ancestry. Simc...
This year, like the previous years, I plan on organising a S&P evening in the cabana. Because I'll only arrive to Jerusalem just before the holiday, and am there for just a week, I don't know if I will have time to prepare. So I think it will be a potluck. Just let me know if you'd like to attend.Boas entradas de Sabbá.
I just posted this on the FB page Sha'are Ratzon, to celebrate 400 years of support from Amsterdam to Israel.
What is/was the Sepharadi equivalent of Challa? Specifically Jews of Portuguese descent? Not talking about Laffa/Khoubz as nice as those breads are. Is their a bread that can rival the cultural superiority of a highly enriched dough that one should ideally make Mezonot on?

I'm doing research on my 7-great-grandfather, Don Menachem ben Chaim Ha-Kohen, and am wondering if anyone in this group might have more information about his life and family origins. It is said that he came from Spain to the Netherlands and then ended up in Germany, but we are now speculating about connections to Portugal and Italy as well. He lived from 1650-1723, according to his grave stone in ...

The Sephardim in Western Europe were boring people ... when it comes to given names. It's Abraham, Aron, Benjamin, David, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Samuel, Salomon and some others over and over again. For this reason I always found the given names Rehuel and Gideon fascinating. I am quite sure that everywhere one encounters the name Rehuel in the Western Sepharic world, there must of necessicty...

The Giornata Europea della Cultura Ebraica in Italy this year focuses on Jewish languages. While many events are about Yiddish -even though in Italy there certainly is no lack of local Jewish languages-, in Livorno they focus on Bagitto. Anyone care to join me on the 18th of september in this town with so much S&P history?
Western Sephardic Yom Kippur in NYC metro: I am thinking of coming to NYC metro for Yom Kippur and would like to know options for a Western Sephardic service. The obvious choice is Shearith Israel. Are there others? Also: suggestions or recommendations where to stay near the service. Thank you.
Hodesh Tob!Does anyone know who runs the Yede Abraham website? I was sad to see that the hosting seems to have not been renewed and and it's currently impossible to access the website.
Submitted for discussion:Would it be correct to say that there are basically five primary sub-sets of the Western Sephardic nusach: 1) Amsterdam2) London/Manchester/Gibraltar3) New York / Philadelphia / Montreal(?)4) Florence / Livorno / Venice / Genova5) Bayonne / Bordeaux / Paris (Buffault)I'm sure I've left out certain places...apologies in advance.Thoughts welcome. :-)
