Of General interest. In Portland, Oregon, between 1885 and 1899, many boys were named after Sir Moshe Montefiore. Information found in the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.

Not strictly associated to any SP community. But just saw this in a library a couple of hours ago. And thought it may be of general interest here.

But I wasn't able to find the original post here (I was using the keywords "library" and "books" to search here). If someone knows about what list I am talking about, or if that website still exists, would you mind to share the l...

This is an English translation of a note published originally in Diario Judio about the Spanish language in S&P communities:THE LOYALTY TO THE SPANISH LANGUAGE OF THR SEPHARDI JEWS IN THE ENGLISH AND DUTCH COLONIAL AMERICAIn August of last year, Dr. Mario Eduardo Cohen, President of CIDICSEF, delivered a highly innovative presentation at the II CIES held in Rio de Janeiro.Dr. Cohen emphasized that...

The account Ibn Sefarad posted this class on the history of the western sephardi communities. Much of what the lecturer says is already known. But, nevertheless I thought it is worth to share. The lecturer mentions also the communities Mikveh Israel and Shearith Israel and some few details about R. Albert Habbai. It may be of general interest here.

Sfarad.es just posted this article about the arrival of the first SP jews to New Amsterdam (today New York), in the anniversary of their arrival. I think may be of general interest. Cons... the article is in Spanish 😅🤌🏻

This note was published yesterday in Enlace Judío, originally written in Spanish by EliSuli. It talks about the origins of the SP community in Brazil (k"k Zur Israel) and the influence of crypto-judaism in the history of that country. I thought it may be of a general interest in this forum.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In the year 1500, a Portuguese naval expedition set sail for India under the command of Admira...

May it be of general interest. R' Daniel Glatstein visited the grave of Hakham Shaul Levi Mortera ע"ה in Amsterdam with a group of American jews. And recorded this short explanation about his life.I know the life of H. Mortera ע"ה may be already know by people here, but I think is good to see a relatively well known Ashkenazi rabbi giving diffusion about the homens da nação 🙂

This post was originally posted in the group "Passages of the Rite" by Mr. Abraham Katz. However, I think this touches also the S&P community. I'm copying the original text here:During the course of searching for a digitized copy of the Bordeaux Haggadah at the Ktiv Hebrew Manuscript website, I came across some interesting manuscripts. One of them was a prayer of thanks for the survival of King L...

This is a section of a chapter titled "Some ironic consequences of Maimonides' rationalist approach to the messianic age", written by Dr. David Berger and published in "The Legacy of Maimonides: Religion, Reason and Community" (Ed's. Yamin Levy and Shalom Carmy).Dr. Berger argues that his last 2 chapters in Hilchot Malachim (Mishne Torah) are worded in such way that may be interpreted very broadly...

A short biographic summary of the life of Hakham Menashe ben Israel, written by Hakham Yosef Bitton, published some few days ago. Even when his life is fairly well known, I thought it was worth to share given his historical relevance.

In this picture is Hakham Ben Zion Uziel ע"ה, but it caught to my eye the men with top hats. Could they be S&P jews? Or just because it was the beginning of XX century? The picture was taken in Tel Aviv

The website sfarad.es just posted this biography of Hakham David de Sola Pool. Unfortunately is in Spanish only, but I think it provides very interesting details.I was surprised to read that, at least according to the author, the ashkenazi community in NY did not consider the Ottoman Jews who were arriving to the USA in the early 1900's as actual Jews. Hakham de Sola Pool was working to help them....

Not sure if this fits properly in the group. If not, feel free to remove it. This is a video from a couple of years ago, my niece (who was 3 yr old then) was learning "El Eliyahu", written by Abraham ibn Ezra (aha! That's the Spanish part of the S&P requirement).Just thought you could appreciate this.😁

This was posted some few days ago as "De Sola Ygdal." It's a beautiful rendition, not sure how accurate to the S&P tradition in rather Amsterdam or London may it be 😅
