Who Do You Think You Are, has a Dutch counterpart, Hidden Past, or in Dutch: Verborgen verleden. Yesterdays edition was about Jeroen Krabbé, actor and painter, mostly from Ashkenazic progeniture. But he has some Moroccon Sephardic ancestry as well. In this video, he discovers that he has Sephardic ancestors as well. See his reaction, from 28.30 into the video. His ancestor is Abraham Azulay, from ...

https://youtu.be/54YIHCXB3OQThe tune for the penitential piyyut 'Ana Ke'ab Zedoni' served as a setting for the Kedusha on the Yamim Hanora'im in Suriname and occasionally in New York. I don't actually recall it being sung during my time as Congregation Shearith Israel. Can anyone tell me whether it's done now? The arrangement in this recording is by my dear friend Raymond Goldstein. Please like and...

Dear group: I know this is probably a shot in the dark, but this is an original familyportrait in our possession, painted in Amsterdam. The frame is also original. Does anyone have any thoughts on the time it might have been painted,or any other information about this? (The portrait,as you can see, seems to be done with quite a stiff brush,so there is certainly not a "master " behind this work.) Th...

In a genealogical magazine De Nederlandsche Leeuw 1883, published in The Netherlands, a J.G. van der Mulen published a transcription of birth register of the Portuguese community of The Hague., covering the years, 1782-1823. I OCR'ed it, made some corrections and republish it here:It's obvious the writer was not familiar with either Portuguese or with the Hebrew calender, so do not get pesky with ...

Thank you for accepting me into the group. I have been researching my husband's Jewish ancestry. His Y-line family and other branches (including Montefiore) were long associated with Bevis Marks. Prior to WW2 his family surname had been Cohen since the time of the marriage of Samuel Cohen to Rachel Buzaglo in 1779 but there is an oral tradition that they were known as Cohen De Lara before they wen...

Inspired by Ton I went to visit the - now closed - exhibition on Jewish The Hague, and aside from the paintings it struck me - again - how the Lopes Suasso family was so omnipresent in The Hague. They played a major role in founding, building and furnishing the synagogue of the Honen Dal congregation, which was completed in 1726. Among others they donated the hechal - which is still in place - and...

Has anyone here read 'The Inquisition' by Henry Charles Lea it seems quite an Opus here is a link to volume one. Even though 100 years old it seems fascinating. All 4 volumes of the book can be downloaded in a variety of formats at no cost.
