Hello all,I'm wondering if anyone has access to the published Bevis Marks Records? I would like to see a transcribed copy of the marriage of Abraham Haim VANANO and Sarah DE MATTOS which I believe took place on 11 Jun 1798. I wonder whether someone might be kind enough to send me a scan of the relevant page, please?I am also looking for evidence of the birth of their daughter Rachel VANANO who I...
This is a darker history concerning what happened to Sephardim, Mizrahim, and poor Ashkenazim during the early State of Israel. They are putting a call out for anyone who suspects that they or a loved one may have been one of the stolen children (particularly from the Yemeni families) and providing DNA testing kits. This is the translation to English courtesy of the Israel Genealogy Research Assoc...

Interesting about Portuguese conversos between 1450 1800 by Norman Fiering
Lecture in London on Monday 14th November.
A very quick question for Michael or Ton.. In London we refer to 'Dutch' ashkenazi I sort of assumed because they came from Holland with a few from the Rhineland but somebody suggested that it is a mispelling of Deutch meaning German !

Hi All,Has anyone read this book? It is fascinating! " King Manuel of Portugal in 1501 leased land in Brazil to a group of New Christians, who have pledged themselves to send out six ships every year and to explore three hundred leagues farther each year." Is anyone studying this? Who was in this group? How can I learn more? Many thanks!
maybe Ton has seen this as its apparently in the Library at Ets Haim (my info may be way out of date) A survey done of the London community in 1684 by a Abraham Israel Zagache (in Spanish) when l say community l mean it includes even those that arent because they were not circumcised. A question here, it calls them Portuguese is it possible that even if they were Spanish they would be called Port...

Trying to understand how contemporary conversos experienced the Inquisition means getting through the histories that have grown up about it. There is no doubt that conversos were persecuted and for victims it was a dreadful experience, but was the persecution of conversos worse than the persecution of religious minorities elsewhere? England is generally thought of as a place of tolerance, unlike '...
Good morning. First Ty for adding me to this group. I have been doing Genetic Genealogy over the past few years. In the process I have discovered Semitic DNA stemming from my YDNA line. I am Haplogroup>R1b>Z279>CTS8087. This Haplogroup and Subclade appears in the region of Navarre Spain, next to the Empire of Aragon. 12,000 Semitics fled Aragon and took refuge in The Kingdom of Navarre. This cause...
This genealogical table of the 17/18th century English Mendes da Costas attempts to show the numerous intra-familial relationships (uncle-niece and cousin marriages) and the close relationship between the Mendes da Costa, Salvador and Lopes Suasso families. with so much intra-marriage it becomes very complicated identifying individual's with the same Hebrew or common name but the naming convention...
Reading recent posts the thought arisesthat the famed Portuguese 'conversos' as in large numbers of our people converted forcefuly who carried on secretly as Jews is maybe just a lovely story and that like Spain they did convert and go to Church every Sunday and celebrate numerous Saints days. So after a few generations they were Christian. When you look at the numbers that came out and the realit...
