Jews of Rhodes: Family Memories & Heritage 22 August 2024 à 15:16

I'm posting a link to my project of a Rhodes related bibliography. I'm including books, some private books, articles and other material. I'm fully conscious that this is a work with no end, and I'm ok with that. When it's possible, I try to check the books (being a librarian in the National Library of Israel helps), but this is not always possible. I update the list quite often, so you can check i...

This is the sticker on the box that contains Rhodes' Sefer Torah. As a member of the National Library of Israel Conservation and Restoration Department, my work is keeping it in the most perfect conservation conditions. And my usual place of work inside the Rare Books warehouse, where the Sefer Torah is, is just 1 meter from it.

Allow me to do this like a mistery game. This is a photo from the Archivio Fondazione CDEC. And it's labeled like this: "1: Matilde Hanan, 2: Clara Soriano, 3: Giacobbe Halfon, 4: Renée Soriano, 5: Leone Maio, 6: Laura Leon, 7: Stella Benveniste ". So the first is Matilde (Mazaltov) Hanan (married Capelluto), b. 1922, and died, if I'm not wrong, in Ontario, Canada on 2011. She survived the Shoah. ...

These young men are shoah survivors from Rhodes. I tried to locate all of them in the family tree and almost succeeded. They are: From left to right: Abramo Levi, Giacomo Hasson, Vittorio Hasson, Samuele Modiano, Eliezer Surmani, Giuseppe (Pepo) Cordoval, Jack Cordoval, Giuseppe Conè, Nel Alhadeff and Giuseppe Hasson in Ostia (Rome) in 1946 (Rhodes Jewish Historical Foundation Archives ; Taken fro...

https://ebreidirodi1944.cdec.it/en/I recommend this new website very much (Italian / English). Although it uses information from the Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea (CDEC), it also adds information and photos from the books of Aron Hasson and another sources. They invite people to send photos and documents.

This photo from the Oregon Jewish museum lists some rhodesli descendants, but the caption doesn't seem to use any order, so I don't know who is who (except the lady, of course). Anyone can tell who is Irv Benveniste, Sam Benveniste, Sam Menashe or Bob Hasson?

You can find this photo of the Codron family in the Rhodes Museum website. It is written about it: "L to R: Giuseppe (Joseph) Codron (1909 – 1927), Rabbi Isaac Cordon’s sister (married last name: Benatar), Rabbi Isaac Codron (died in Auschwitz), Rebecca (Rivka) (nee Franco) (died in Auschwitz) and Shemtov (Santo) Codron (1913 – 1997). From: Cheryl Codron". I have some questions that, maybe, someon...

Yaakov / Giacobbe Surmani and Sarah "Giovanna" Hasson had many children, but, if the records are correct, two of them died at birth or a short time after that. Very few years after that, the shoa hit hard on this family as did on all rhodesli jews. The parents were killed, and, apparently, many of the children. I said "apparently" because sites like "I nomi della shoa" that lists italian citizens ...

Isaac Alhadeff’s life story could be a Steven Spielberg filmThat's the beginning of an article that I recommend reading very much. https://artsci.washington.edu/news/2017-11/after-wwii-nightmare-generous-life In the photo, you can see, from the left: Isaac "Ike" Nessim Alhadeff (1916-1912), David M. Alhadeff (I'm confident it's David Morris Alhadeff 1921-2004, but not 100% sure). And the third is ...

Per chi splende questo lume: La mia vita oltre AuschwitzWe just got this book at the National Library of Israel. The book, as you see, is written in italian. I could see that about a 25% is written with white letters over black paper, no need to have a big imagination why."In a journey back in time, Virginia retraces her extraordinary life: her birth in Rome and her childhood in Italy. Her transfe...

According to Moïse Rahmani, in his book "Un pan de notre mémoire", two men were killed by the nazis before being deported: "Oriel / Uriel Berro, married to a greek woman, wanted to avoid the order to assemble. Informed on, he was shot on the spot. In september 1944, attempting to escape, the young Robert Hasson was taken into hiding by the italian priest Don Edoardo Fino. Someone informed on them....

This is Isaac David Israel (1852 Rhodes - 1944 Seattle), wife Sarah Beton (1857 Rhodes - 1947 Seattle) and their children. I could find only the "face" pictures but not the whole photo. I've checked if it was posted here, but I couldn't find it. Has anyone this photo? Maybe [David Israel](https://www.facebook.com/david.israel.5439), they are his great granparents, and grandparents and granduncles/...

These ladies are Rica "Ricucha" Israel (Menashe) and Fassana Menashe (Franco). The photo was taken in Rhodes, 1928. But, who's that woman in the middle?

As you can see, this photo is of Mazaltov (Matilde) Berro (married Benun). She was murdered in the shoa. This photo seems to be taken from some kind of book written by a grandson, that I think it can't be other than Salvatore S. Piha, that died in Los Angeles on 1 Nov 2000. I'm interested in this book (or maybe booklet, or maybe it's a compilation of testimonies), but I can't find it. I work in th...

This is the tombstone in Rhodes cemetery of Palomba Alhadeff, daughter of Yaakov, died on 20 Jan 1872. It's a shot in the dark, but... does anyone know more about her? Specially if she had a daughter named Simcha Alhadeff (married Abouaf).

For some time, I had this photo labeled as Ruben Hasson and Rachel Tarica family. But I was checking the Rhodes Jewish Museum website and I see I may be totally wrong. Is it known who this family is?

Pictured from left to right are: Violeta, Celebi, and Shlomo Hasson. All three were deported to Auschwitz in 1944, where they perished. That's all I know. Has anyone more information about them?
