When I went to the Esnoga in Amsterdam, I remember a custom to include your companhero de banca (or something to that effect) in the misheberakh after an aliya. Can someone tell me more about this? I don't remember if there was a specific phraseology that is used or just a custom brekaha according to the moment?Secondary question, is this done in other S&P communities?

Can anyone tell me the dimensions of a classic talet of our tradition? I am shopping for a new one, taled di seta is way out of my budget so I am trying to at least get the dimensions right. Taled di seta website does not specify the dimensions and other websites give various sizes "worn in front" but I don't want to get too narrow like a scarf. Thanks in advance!

Sharing the following article that might be of interest to some readers. It describes the early relationship between the two Shearith Israel's, from NYC and Montreal, based mostly on congregational bylaws and other documents.

FYI, in case someone may know a suitable candidate that would be interested in preserving/reviving our tradition in Montreal.

Here is an example of a haftara, first in the Moroccan nusah and then from 6:11 it is in the spanish nusah. Can someone explain why the Amsterdam way to chant the haftara is essentially the same as the moroccan way? Is one castilian and the other maybe andalus or something?

Is there a way to buy the Koren Amsterdam Humash? It is listed as out of stock on their website so I'm wondering if second-hand is the only option left?

Lengthy article speaking of the origins and development of Montreal's S&P synagogue. Includes mention of the first families, of the links with Bevis Marks, the de Sola and Meldola families, the links with NY's Shearith Israel, a list of its ministers and hazanim, etc.

Since we are talking about hagadot, is this series of recordings the Italian rite or Spagnolo?

I am looking for a S&P prayer book for Yom Hakipurim with English translation (so either the De Sola or the London one). Wondering if someone has an extra copy willing to sell. When I try to buy through Shearith Israel the shipping from NY to Canada is ridiculously high I dont know why. And currently the London one is out of stock in the Heshaim site. If someone has the Crehange version with Frenc...

Roque Gonzalez Garza : was a Mexican general/politician who was a member of the Division del Norte under the command of Francisco Villa. He was President of Mexico for a short period as an interim in 1915. Is anybody here an expert in Mexican genealogies? The Garza family is a well known crypto jewish family in northern Mexico. Does anyone know if his Garza branch appears in any confirmed new chri...

General Pedro Rodriguez Triana, on his wedding day with Herlinda Levy on June 5 1916 in San Miguel del Mezquital Zacatecas.I need to do more research but I think the full name of Herlinda Levy was Levy Abadi. General Rodriguez was active in the agrarian revolution in Mexico and later on was the governor of the state of Coahuila. He was also a candidate for the Mexican presidency representing the C...

A few weeks ago I had posted the following article in French https://doi.org/10.3406/rhmc.1939.3737 about the Portuguese jewish presence in Mexico. Some requested a translation, so I have attached here a translation into English that I made. I have not reviewed it yet so there might still be some errors. If anyone wants to review it always helps to have two pairs of eyes rather than one.Hope you e...

For those that can read French, here is an article by Robert Ricard, published in 1939 on the Portuguese Jews in Mexico (then called Nueva Espana). It is an overview of known sources pertaining to Portuguese jews in New Spain. It lists the origins of many of these in the Portuguese towns of Alvala, Açores, Braga, Castelo Branco, Freixo de Espada, Lisbon, Mogadouro, Porto, Sarzedas, etc. as well as...

Can anyone share some info on Isaac Athias's Tesoro de Preceptos or on the author himself? I came across it reading Miriam Bodian's book. Is it similar to Tesouros dos Dinim? Here is a link to a copy of the book:

Interesting survey of the books and curriculum of Ets Haim in the 18th century. Meir Villegas Henríquez might be useful for your research.

I went by the Montreal Shearith Israel cementery and found Rev. Abraham de Sola's tombstone who was minister here for almost 4 decades, he was the son of David Aaron de Sola Hakham at Bevis Marks. Also at the end a picture of some of the founding families of the Jewish community in Canada, the Hart family. Also for those members from Montreal anybody know if Esther Joseph the wife of Rev. De Sola ...

Anybody have pictures of traditional shabbat lamps or hanukiyot they would care to share here? I love the Italian shabbat lamps that hang, but anything with historical connections is welcome. I ask because they are very hard to find on this continent, so I might commission one to be custom made. Looking for ideas. Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a version of Mishnayot that is commercially available? Either hebrew only or with english or spanish translations? I would prefer something with just the text of the Mishna without much commentary. Sefaria is great but I would like a good physical copy.

For the members in Amsterdam who live near the Esnoga, I will be visiting at the end of May for a Shabbat. Me and my wife will be staying in a nearby hotel and am trying to plan for meals. Is there kiddush after services? or if someone is interested in hosting us for a meal it is always nice to meet the local people! Message me if you have info, thanks!

Hello, technical question for the group: does anyone know of a program or website where we can do something like this? Especially the highlighting of the text (with no sound to practice our own cadence) and also adding our own recordings? I have seen many different videos on youtube with a similar program and it just seems very practical. Unfortunately none exist with S&P tahamim.

For those of you who read spanish, here is an interesting article analyzing the songs and poems recorded in Leonor de Carvajal's inquisition trial in Mexico. She was the sister of the more famous Luis de Carvajal, they were both murdered at the Auto de fe of 1596 in Mexico city. Interesting to note that many are mixed in both spanish and portuguese. Many of these songs might be originally in portu...
