The first American Consul-General in Bucharest, appointed by president Ulysses Grant was a S&P Jew. His father Daniel Levi Maduro was born in Amsterdam and his grandfather Moses Levi Maduro served as Hazzan of Shearit Israel in NYC.

Hello,Anybody know of any Escaloni or Eskaloni families in Argentina? Originally from Salonica in Greece, thought to have fled to Argentina during or right after the war. I am trying to find relatives of a branch of Escaloni who settled in Belgium after the war.Thank you

This article lists some major figures of founding members of montreal's jewish community (the S&P), interestingly at the end it mentoins David Corcos former rabbi of the Jamaica congregation who eventually moved to Montreal, it attributes the Bendigamos song to him. First time I heard that. I thought it was attributed to the Bordeaux community? Maybe he was the one to introduce it to Jamaica and N...

Montreal's S&P is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. Many activities are planned during the year including an event with a shabbaton with clergy members of the sister S&P congregations. For those that may be able to attend it would be a pleasure to see you here!

Any recommendations on articles or books regarding commercial, cultural or other types of ties between diaspora sephardic communities? For example the Amsterdam, London and Caribbean ties, or other similar ties with different regions in the Mediterranean or Asia. It is for a university assignment so preferably reliable and/or academic sources.

In addition to the poll below, if you have added your skill to the list, how many hours per week could you realistically dedicate to this. All of us have work/studies and obviously cannot dedicate ourselves full time, but a few hours per week or month can in the end amount to something big. Add your answers below. If you do not have time consider adding maybe some hours during vacation or in betwe...

If this Foundation were to progress to something further than a discussion forum, where our members were to contribute knowledge, time, skills and money in order to actively preserve and strengthen our tradition, what areas/skills would you be able to contribute towards this goal. Add your skill as needed. (This goes in order to help our existing communities as well as emerging ones)

We will be hosting a family whose grandmother was from thessaloniki and survived the shoah but afterwards married a dutch non jew and she never wanted her children to be jewish. But obviously they all know they are jewish an...

I had an idea last night, in light of the recent discussion about what can we do to about preserving our tradition and of reaching those who are interested in "re-claiming" their tradition. With the High Hollidays approaching, and especially Yom HaKipurim and all its significance, I, as one "rediscovering" my roots so to speak, would love to read form each one of the members of this group a short ...

What is the origin of the custom of saying in a hushed tome the portion of the Shema "weh'ara af amonai..." and is there a specific WS custom to this?I was told by my hazanut teacher from Bordeaux that this porion is actually read out louder than the rest. So two totally different traditions.
