The Foundation for the Preservation of the Western Sephardic Tradition 28 July 2011 à 16:05

People, can we please be united in *Preserving the WS tradition*?I am thinking of creating another group: "Heated debate for Western Sepharaddim". We could discuss all these controversial subjects ("Kabbala", "Who is a Jew" etc.) there, then come back here and be friends!

I read a lot of books on the history of S&P communities (especially Amsterdam), many of the writers have a low opinion on the Jewish knowledge of the founders. "They were conversos, and therefor they knew nothing about Judaism..."This is surprising, as they had been conversos only for a few generations. Even today, after centuries of crypto-Judaism, Iberian anusim have kept relatively many Jewish ...

I didn't get much reactions on the idea of organizing a weekly lecture at Midrash Sepharadi. The idea is to split the evening in two parts, the first part will be a shi`ur on Rmbam with Rabbi Kassin, the second part will be on the Western Sephardic tradition. I would like to hear ideas on how we can fill in the second part.Catriel Ceballos Jonathan Cohen Ashley Perry Uriel Milo Abshalom Saša René H...

David Ramirez, did you mean this article? I just would like to see the evidence -of considering black converts non-Jews- in Morteira's writings.Black Jews *were* buried at the Beth Hayyim cemetery.

There are some very interesting discussions going on here, and my fingers are itching to join in.BUT, they are a distraction from the goal of the group, and I am concerned they might chase away people who didn't join for reading such discussions. There are many other groups for general discussions about Judaism, please let's limit this one to ideas about the Preservation of Western Sephardic Judais...

As of yet only three people are interested in the meeting in Jerusalem. Maybe people are busy because of Pesah?

(I wrote this as part of an answer to a member who asked me in a private message what involvement we are looking for from members, I thought I could say the same to all members here) We have set up this group to start discussing ideas about how to preserve our tradition. But in order for it to be effective, we need to set up an real foundation and have people involved who have experience in either...

Dear members. This was a wonderful idea! Many people showed interest. But we really need active participation to make this work. So far, very little has been done. I do want to thank @Catriel Ceballos for making a great effort to help, but we need more people!

We had a very interesting meeting last month. Unfortunately right after the meeting I was very busy with travel plans and later -until now- with the traveling itself, so I haven't had the time to post any of it, or to start realizing the plans we made. But we need to keep this subject alive! Please be as active a member as you can.Tizku leshanim rabboth, nengimoth wetoboth!!!

When I started making the website I wanted to add an image to make it look more attractive, I more or less randomly chose this pic (group profile pic) Even though the Amsterdam Esnoga is an important landmark of our tradition, I don't want to make this to "Amsterdam-centric". So if anyone can suggest a better picture, please do so.

I've started to experiment with creating a website. I've never done this before and still don't understand how everything works, but this is what it looks like now:

Please invite your friends! We need people with organisational skills for this to work. And we're probably going to need somebody with experience in website building.

Relations between Western Sepharaddim and Iberian AnusimMany of us have ancestors that were Anusim. These times many Anusim that stayed in Iberia are looking to return to Judaism.People suggested that they should adopt Western Sephardic traditions. This could make sense, but it is up to them. They of course had a different development, preserved some traditions of their own that are different from ...

Possible projects for the foundation-Starting a publishing house. I have a long list of works by Western Sephardic Hakhamim that I would love to see published. It is an important part of our heritage. Of course it would also be wonderful if the publishing house could publish new books.-Recording of Hazzanuth. There are recordings of Hazzanuth from Amsterdam, London and New York, but what about all...

It would be great if we could find smeone with experience in creating a foundation. For this to work it needs to be an official and serious project, rather than just another interesting FB group. But this is a start.

Definition of estern Sephardic traditionI would say Western Sephardic communities are the communities of Sepharaddim in Western Europe (Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, UK) and those of the Americas. These communities have much in common and are distinct from - although related to - the Levantine and Maghrebi Sepharaddim.
