The Foundation for the Preservation of the Western Sephardic Tradition 08 July 2020 à 23:21

A Dutch Jewish newspaper from 1886 speaks of a recent migration of Jews from Jamaica to Bahia. And says that these were followed by Jews from New Orleans, Lisbon, Marseille and Bordeaux. Does anyone know anything about this?

It should also include the Sephardic banking families. (Edit: Sorry, for those who don't understand Italian, this is a research of the Jewish banking activities/families of the Monferrato area of Piedmont in the second half of the 16th century. Several Portuguese families of Ferrara and Turin operated banks in the area.)

This was posted by Noa in a subthread, where I had questions about it that might be better asked in a seperate post:Were these all old Portuguese Jewish families? Or were there already Spanish refugees?I was wondering if there is a list somewhere of Portuguese Jewish family names from before the arrival of Spanish refugees, and perhaps another list from before the forced conversions.

The Hamburg Portuguese community had already been in decline for a while, yet in the first half of the 20th century there were still quite a number of families represented. Just a few of them are found among the names of Holocaust victims. Especially Cassuto, Sealtiel, Abendana Belmonte, De Castro, Luria, Curiel, Delmonte, Jessurun. And even of those, thankfully not large numbers. (God forbid, I'm...

I am always intrigued by the less famous details in history. Small communities only mentioned in passing, but also "obscure" Hakhamim. In Amsterdam in the beginning of the community, much depended on the first Hakhamim that were brought from elsewhere (we all know why, no need to get into that). The "famous" ones have been discussed here at length: Levi Mortera, Pardo, to a lesser extent Uziel, et...

I've been looking for culinairy traditions from the Rite Portugais communities of France. Searching the internet, asking in the different fora got me absolutely nothing. The only person I know personally who grew up in one of the communities hasn't been answering my messages. Anyone here?

Has anyone here included the Darmon family in their research? I wonder if there is a connection between the Darmon who were members of the Portuguese/Livornese community in Tunis, and those who were in Algeria since at least the time of the Expulsion.

Since so many people are at home these days, and some may be a bit bored... perfect time to try to dig up some of those old Sephardic family recipes? I have basically nothing from the French Portuguese communities. Does anyone?(Especially Pesah recipes!)

If they can do something like this, is there a good reason we can't? (I'm not even expecting something as fancy as this...)*Reviving the old thread without risk of reviving the unrelated discussions in the comments.

Laura Graziani Secchieri reads סטילה מליוליא (Ferrara, 1515) as -Sephardic- "Stella di Llull". Can anyone confirm the likelyhood of this? Never came across that name among Sephardic Jews.

Have we had a general discussion about Western Sepharaddim in Ottoman lands, and wherever they founded seperate congregations? I'm talking about people from European communities who kept a strong connection to European communities, and had synagogues seperate from other local Jews. For example: The Grana of Tunis and Susa, the Italian synagogue of Istanbul, the Portuguese of Izmir. Any others? I r...

Interesting family trees, about half of the families of Sephardic origin. The most interesting thing for me -unless I misunderstood- is that apparently there were two completely unrelated Castelli families in Livorno, one Sephardic and one Italian in origin. (The Castelli of Monte San Savino and Florence belonging to the Italian)

These links to online works from the JTS library don't work anymore. Does anyone know where they were moved to? Can't find it on their website.

Sephardic history disappearing from the streets of Milan. One would almost think it's a conspiracy. ;)

In which communities, besides Amsterdam, is it customary to wear the talet for minha (at least on sabbá)?

I was wondering if anyone has information about the surname Adda. The Adda I know are from Egypt, and trace their family back to Livorno and Bologna. Some think their name comes from the Italian river named Adda, but I doubt it. The Adda family in Tunis have their name spelled عدة in Arabic.

Portuguese Jews are allergic to the daghesh hazaq. :) Not just in places where the vernacular doesn't have gemination, but even in Italy where it's an important feature of the language. In Livorno, the Jewish dialect in fact ignores it in many instances. So, is this a tradition to preserve? We do also traditionally appreciate the important of precision in reading Hebrew, and our own grammarians ack...

There are all kinds of websites where one can listen to recordings of S&P hazzanut. A site for Amsterdam, another for Italian melodies (but mixed with non-S&P Italian), others for London, etc.Wouldn't it be great if there was one websites where you can find melodies from different places together? Not necessarily everything, I'd start with the simple things everyone should know to do at home: Qui...
