The Sephardic Diaspora 06 July 2022 à 23:29

Hello everyone. Having looked at the very, very long list of notaries that have serviced Amsterdam in the early 1800s, I wonder if anyone has created a list of the notaries that might have been the go-to persons for wills and business transactions for the Sephardic community? I'm looking for a will for my 4th great grandfather, Isaac de Abraham Aletrino Ribiero (1749-1827). He was a shipping broke...

Well, the 2020 digitalization project was very good to me. I found the 1759 will of my 8th great grandmother, Ester Alpron. Ester was the companion/wife of Abraham de Isaac Granada, and her daughter Maseltob Alpron (married to David de Isaac Naar Pretto) was my 7th great grandmother. Hopefully lot's of genealogical information in here (and explanations perhaps of who Maseltob's father is), and I a...

Back in July 2018, we discussed the Sarrucos who went to Suriname, and the conversation included handwriting comparisons and the marriage of Israel de Haim Sarruco and Sara de Isaac Sarruco. I found this record many years ago (apologies, I don't have a record of where I found it but presumably it was in the Amsterdam city archives online). Perhaps these documents will provide more clues for you al...

Gary's earlier post made me want to try testing my results on Gedmatch. As you may recall (it is a long time since I posted), through documents I proved that my 4th great grandparents migrated to Puerto Rico and were married in synagogue in Suriname and that they were descendants of the Aletrino, de Lima, Cohen-Lobatto, and Sarucco families of Amsterdam. My origin results on Familytreedna showed n...

Hello everyone,I wondered if someone might help me with this ketubah. I believe it is for Jeudah de la Bella (aka Juda Aletrino) and Rachel Marina (aka Rachel Suskina). Might someone help me with the genealogy information included, any dates, and any reference to a notary? Thank you in advance for your help!

Every so often, I fall for it. I am on ancestry.com (or another genealogy website), and I find an interesting family tree or a message on a message board. The author speaks in an authoritative manner and seems to know what he/she is talking about. And so I ask them a question about the source of their information (so I too can look at it) and the response is always "I don't know". All too often no...

Hello everyone,Attached from Inventory 399 of the Portuguese Jewish Congregation Archives in Amsterdam is the 1794 ketubah for my 5th great grandparents, Isaac de Abraham Aletrino y Ribiero (son of Abraham de Juda Aletrino and Rachel de Abraham Ribiero) and Maseltob de David Lima y Naar (daughter of David de Simson Lima and Judith de David Naar). Might anyone be able to tell me if there are any re...

Hello everyone. I finally found a death record for my 5th great grand aunt, Rachel de Isaac Aletrino y Lima amongst the <<Huwelijksbijlagen>> for her husband's 2nd marriage. While I can tell that the extract is from 1829, I cannot read the death year (other than it was in the 1820s). Might someone help me with the handwriting? I know many people have been searching for Rachel as she disappears sud...

THE JONA FAMILY: Below is the ketubah from Suriname of Dina Jona and Mordechai Fonseca. I believe Dina was born in Amsterdam and is the daughter of Jacob Abraham Jona and Sara Eliau Fonseca Bouviel. By any chance, does this ketubah confirm or provide any information about Dina? Thank you in advance for your help!

The SARUCO-ULLOA FAMILY: Below is the ketubah for my 6th great grandparents Haim Israel Saruco and Ribca David Ulloa who lived in Suriname. I wondered whether there is any more information about Ribca in this document. I believe she may be related to an Ulloa family based in Speightstown, Barbados. Her father David may be the son of a merchant named Daniel Ulloa whose will codicil was proved in Lo...

The COHEN LOBATTO-JONA FAMILY: Attached is the ketubah from Suriname for my 6th great grandparents, Eliau Cohen Lobatto and Judith Jacob Jona. I wondered if the document contains any interesting genealogical information, particularly about Judith? I believe she was born in Amsterdam like Eliau. Might there be a reference to a notary by any chance? Thanks for your help.

If, per chance, anyone has access to the circumcision records from 1747 Amsterdam, I am trying to identify the name of the child born to Guidon de Simson Cohen Lobatto on or about 1 January 1747. The Amsterdam archives do not seem to have the records for this year. And, unfortunately, none of the birth records I have found include the baby's name. I am hoping the name is Eliau. Thank you in advan...

Hello everyone. I wondered if I might get some help translating this Ketubah. In particular, I'm looking for any genealogically helpful information. I believe this may be my 8th great grandfather, Abraham Granada (died in 1752 in Amsterdam). The Abraham Granada I know was married to Ester Alfarin, also known as Ester Alpron. Abraham had substantial wealth in London (a great deal of it inherited by...

Hello everyone, I found this Ketubah in the Amsterdam archives (Inventory 394). Might someone help me identify any useful genealogical information such as (1) the name of the bride; (2) the parents of the couple; and (3) the date of the Ketubah. (I apologize in advance for any annoyance; I am trying to teach myself elementary Hebrew for genealogical purposes as fast as I am able. Google translate ...

Hello everyone. I am curious whether Dutch citizens were required to obtain government permission before they traveled either abroad or to the Dutch colonies in the Caribbean during the early 19th century. If yes, do any documents exist that would record permission? So far, the only evidence of arrivals and departures I could find was in the local Paramaribo, Suriname newspaper in the form of adve...

Very proud to have found my 4th great grandparents' ketubah (by accident) in the Netherlands National Archives file <<Portugees-Israëlitische Gemeente Suriname>>. Inventory 414. Shortly after they married, they settled in Puerto Rico.

In a variety of marriage banns from 1673-1700, I have encountered the Alfarin family. The records say they are from Pinaorada, Pinjorada, or Penorada depending on the spelling used by the record keeper. Might anyone have an idea where this place is today?

Hello everyone, I wondered if someone might be able to assist me with this Ketubah record from the Amsterdam archives (Inventory 382) for Moses de Haim Saruco and Ester de Selomo Rocha from I believe 1688? By any chance are there any genealogical details about Moses in this record? I know that he had a brother named Isaac. Might his mother be named? What role does Imanuel Curiel play in this reco...

Hello everyone. I feel very close now to linking my Saruco line from Suriname to the Jesurun Furtado and Saruco lines from Hamburg. I found this Dotar membership registry in the Amsterdam archives (#324). Would anyone happen to know what the word "genero" means in this record as it is used to describe the relationship between Isaac Saruco and Haim Saruco? Thank you for your help.

May I ask what the general membership requirements were for joining the Portuguese Jewish synagogues in Amsterdam during the 18th century? While researching my Cohen Lobattos, I find, for example, one Isaac Cohen Lobatto (with no patronym stated) in the fintas and ofertas for the year 1759 (Inventory 277 of the Amsterdam Archives) when I know from research that there could be several Isaac Cohen L...

Hi everyone,As a follow-up to our discussion of Abraham de Granada the other day, I attach copies of some of his estate papers (unfortunately I could not download them in page order but the page number is in their title). This set is one of my favorites because the original red stamp mark is in such good condition.By the time of this record, Abraham's daughter (and my 7th great grandmother, Maselt...

Hi everyone. Might someone be able to help me with this marriage intention from Suriname? I can identify the bride and groom, Moses Raphael Jona and Sara Jona. But, I'm trying to figure out who the other named Jona family members are. As an fyi, I learned that the Jona family came from Gibraltar, members of the family then moved to Amsterdam and then Suriname.

I have mentioned before that my Cohen Lobattos and Sarucos moved to Suriname in the 1700s from Amsterdam. Although I do not know the story of why for the former family, I know part of the story for the latter family. Attached is a page from the Registro dos Despachados of 1764 in which my 7th great grandfather, Israel de Joseph Saruco Gabay, and his son (and my 6th great grandfather Haim), agreed ...
