Another website that may be of interest to the group: Persée, an open access digital library of French-language scholarly journals, established by the Ministry of National Education of France. I have found a few interesting articles on the subject of my research.
For those who dont know it, a great site
Jamaica Will Extracts
In my files I have 22 pages of Extracts from Wills of the Jews of Jamaica. I printed these off some 7 years ago at the Mormons family research rooms in Kensington. Unfortunately, on the last page it does say that none of the data may be reproduced on any other website. It could be that this data is now available elsewhere, in which case what I have here is not needed, but if not, I could list t...

Here's a nice announcement in the Jewish Chronicle, June 11, 1948.
Just found something I didn't know about (although some of you might). Searching for my relative George Ascoli on the 1939 UK Register, I found him at 4 Holmesdale Gardens, Hastings, listed as the Spanish & Portuguese Hospital (possibly a nursing home in view of its location on the coast). The list of residents makes interesting reading. Hope the images are clear. I have also Googled and found ...
https://youtu.be/qPOkFbAnxDgThis melody for Yigdal, based on the song 'Le Violon de Mon Père' by the French - Algerian singer Enrico Macias, is frequently sung at Misgav Ladach - my local synagogue in Jerusalem. Although most of the congregation is of North African descent, there is a significant Spanish and Portuguese component. Hazzan David Ben Soussan, who frequently acts as shaliach tsibur, w...
Ester Lea Cohenet Persiano (1675-1727) was the wife of Zaddik Cohen Belinfante (1676-1750), chief rabbi of Amsterdam. Her family name implies that at some point they came from Persia (present-day Iran) to the Netherlands. Is there any other historical evidence of Jewish migration from Persia to Europe?

I would be happy to hear your thoughts on the following matter: the etymology of Cansino. (This is all speculation on my part, so thank you for bearing with me.) "Cansino" resembles other Sephardic names such as "Almosnino" or "Sonsino". The root of the latter would be "almosn" and "sons", and the sufix "ino" would have been added to "sephardize" them. If this theory were correct, then the Hebrew ...
I need some basic help. I haven't use this database for quite some time and I have no idea how I can get a copy of this article about my great great grandmother. I registered [some time to go] but I can't seem to find a method of seeing the document referred to in this in this index. Thanking you in advance
Can anyone with better eyesight or imaging software help transcribe the Hebrew inscription on these gravestones? The English reads:1) "Here Lies Interred the Earthly Remains of Mr Abraham of Moses Mendes da Costa who lived justly and Religiously the term of fourscore years being born in October 1683 and died the 11th January 1763Peace be to His Memory"2) S(epultura) do Bomaventurado Mose Mendes da...

On reading a critique on the various writings on the Jews in Brazil in the 17th century, one note struck me as amusing and in a few words very illuminating (so much for the poor scared converso....absolutely wonderful)Untill the 18th Century,it was not unusual for Amsterdam Jews to assume the risk of going to what the parnassim called the "Land of Idolatry" (Spain, Portugal,Brazil) to seek their ...
I am grateful to David Mendoza for accepting me into this group. I am originally from Spain but currently reside in the United States. I have been researching the Cansino* family for some time now, both for genealogical and historical purposes. I am interested in documenting and understanding the diaspora of the Jewish and the converted branches of this particular family, which proved to be partic...
London lecture on Monday, followed by a crash course on Jewish Law and what is possibly the first Portuguese class taught at the synagogue in a couple of hundred years.
Sorry all, annoyingly when I uploaded my file again my message disappeared. Thanks to Michael Waas I was lucky to receive the prenuptial agreement between Sara Ledesma and Moses Aron Henriques from 1760. Michael saw that the agreement was mentioned in the ketubah copy which I found thanks to Ton Tielen's post yesterday. It is in Dutch which unfortunately I do not speak and I cannot read the callig...
Thanks to William Yehudha De Oliveira and Olve Utne I have found a lot of new information for my research concerning the familiy tree of Abraham Levi Vitoria alias Italiaender (Venice c. 1639-Amsterdam 1699). After looking at the information they gave me about the Italiaenders in Denmark, I could very quickly conclude that they fit into this familiy tree and are not a separate branch of the Levi ...
The archive of the Portuguese Jewish Community of Amsterdam has come online. Michael Waas broke the news a few days ago here. It seems to have escaped the attention of many that now a few primary genealogical sources are also online: registers of birth, of burials, and, maybe most importantly, all the Ketubot of the Sephardic Jews of Amsterdam. All the Ketubot are in Hebrew, They are all signed by...
