Is anyone here familiar with researching Sephardic ancestry in the Caribbean including Barbados and Trinidad in particular? We hit a snag in our research and could use some help from a researcher familiar with how to go about doing this. I was recommended to this group from an outstanding researcher and human being who spent all morning helping me in the tracing the tribe group. This must truly be...

Thought this would be of interest to the group. In contrast to the German Jews wanting to be like Sephardim mentioned in this article, at Shearith Israel we've always built new-classical sanctuaries to emphasize our Western heritage.

I have been researching Sephardic family that went to the Ottoman Empire (Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Rhodes, Middle East, Monastir, northern Africa (Egypt to Morocco) since 1997. I now have over 200,000 people collected. A file (SurnameReport 200000.pdf) is available in the Files of this group which lists the major names I have researched. I would be glad to see if your family is included.

I have a riddle for you: where does a couple go between 1648 and 1655 to get married from the Amsterdam Portuguese community? Hint: they don't show up in the Ondertrouw register for that period in the city, the dowry was provided by the de Pinto family, and wife's family was now conclusively known by at least 4 separate aliases. Oh, and both families were definitely in Amsterdam during this period...

I mentioned some time ago how distant family were proud to be of Portuguese descent but not rushing to a synagogue. So this article rang bells, Ana Pancheco is Santa Fes historian and was talking about people claiming Spanish citizenship being the descandants of conversos, it was from some 8 months agoFor some, such as Pacheco, the discovery of her family’s Sephardic roots will not set her off to...

Dear friends, I told you that at the moment many graves on the sephardic cemetery Hamburg-Altona are covered with moss and unfortunately it is not possible to read the inscripts and make good pictures. But we have luck! I found more than 2000 (!) pictures dated 1936-2010 from this cemetery. Some are described and many pictures are in high quality so that it was possible to read the inscripts.I need...

Hi everybody, I just joined because after years of thinking that my father's family were all Dutch, recently I began doing further research in order to apply for Portuguese nationality under the Law of right of return. I was surprised to find so many Portuguese names amongst my Dutch ancestors including hundreds of Queridos and Cardosos amongst many others. To date it would appear that at least 15...
