"At first the congregation met for worship in a hall in St. James street; but in 1777 the members built their first synagogue on a lot belonging to David David, at the junction of Notre Dame and St. James streets, close to the present court-house."St James (Saint Jaques) and Notre Dame are parallel, so there is no junction. Anybody know where this synagogue was?
The now famous grave of the "servant Elieser" in Ouderkerk became the centre of a ceremony to commemoreate slavery. How do you explain to these people that Elieser was a Jew who might not have appreciated these rituals, without being condemned as a racist?
Of course they got the name of the author wrong... But here it is:
So is this what a 17th century taleth looked like...? I never saw the stripes along the length, but it looks nice. I wonder where I can have one made. (There are places here in Jerusalem that make custom taleths, but I don't like the wool they use)

I was thinking that it would be great if we had a "contact person" in every location that has/had an S&P community. We have plenty of people from Amsterdam, London, New York, Philadelphia, but what about the other places? In my travels I have mostly been dependent on my own research. So, if you live in a place with S&P history and wouldn't mind being contacted by other members for info, let us know!
Does anyone know if the manusripts of H David Cohen de Lara's unpublished works are anywhere to be found? I am especially interested in the unpublished part of Kether Kehuna (Yod through Resh?), Beth Dawid - Nomenclator, Ohel Dawid and Osar Rab.

I am trying to find out if indeed the author of Malkhe Yehudha http://www.hebrewbooks.org/45873 is the same Jehuda Vega/Jeuda Viega/Jeuda Viegas who was Haham of the Amsterdam community of Newe Shalom in 1616, as the Jewish Encyclopedia seems to claim. (JE says he went to Constantinople in 1610, but in 1616 he still appears in function in the records of the community.) http://www.jewishencyclopedi...

A while ago someone posted an article about conversos in 17th century Uruguay on Facebook. I was sure I saved it but can't find it again.
Here it is claimed that the ginger in the classic dutch-sephardic pastry "gemberbolus" was added by Ashkenazim. Does that make sense?
Came across this while looking for something on Google. I haven't read the original article, has any of you?In any case, it surprises me that Professor Salomon did not know that there indeed was -and is- a Sephardic community in Genoa. And I am pretty sure there was one in Modena as well. Also surprising that he was unaware of the name "Pires" as a variant form of "Peres". Especially since one memb...
Several times I saw Dutch records of Sephardic Jews who moved to Staten Island to farm tobacco. Did they ever form a community there?
