The hekhal in the synagogue of the Israeli parliament came from the Italian town of Soragna. Reportedly, this 1594 synagogue followed the Spanish rite, even though the new 1855 synagogue follows the Italian rite.

The Sephardic history in Emden confuses me. The Portuguese received privileges a number of times, and those of 1703 explicitly speak of a synagogue. Yet it seems that there was a synagogue already at that time, and it isn't clear whether it was Ashkenazi, Sepharaddi or mixed, but most people seem to assume it was Ashkenazi. So, was the synagogue that was replaced in 1836 built as a Sephardic or an...

Anybody know of an online version of any of these two works by Moses Belmonte: Perakym (Pirqe Aboth) and Paraphrasis Caldaica en los Cantares de Selomoh?

I wonder if this historian has a source for this besides his own imagination?"The congregation, **recognizing that the Ashkenazim were more versed in halakhah (Jewish law)**, engaged them for such synagogue functions as shohet and bodek (kosher butcher and inspector), and mohel (circumciser)."

Many Sephardic Jews who moved to Eres Yisra'el changed their names, and the typical Iberian Jewish name is a rarity here these days. So when I was looking for an orthopedist and the first two names that came up were Mendes Nasi and Sasportas, I was pleasantly surprised.

Does anyone know what might be the source of this statement:"Springfield also had a colony of Sephardi Jews in the 1830s, but the first Russian arrivals found no trace of them."I can't find any additional info.

This is a group for people who would like to assist in preserving the Western Sephardic/Spanish and Portuguese tradition. There are a few controversial topics that have been a major distraction in the discussions in this group. For this reason we have created a seperate group named "Western Sephardic Debate".In that group we can discuss topics as Rabbinic treatment of conversos, the Kabala controve...

Is there any historical continuity between the 16th/17th century Iberian converso communities in Naples and the modern community? It seems that by the time the modern community was founded, the Iberian conversos had already left/assimilated, but I'm not sure.

Salomon Vaz Dias mentioned tunes for Hallel. How many tunes do we have recorded? I want to learn them all.The regular hallel as it is done today in Amsterdam I really dislike, it's done Ashkenazi style with most parts mumbled rather than read or sung.

"...his mother was known as “la portuguesa,” a strong hint that she was of Jewish origins, since the term Portuguese was often synonymous with “Jew” in Spain."Any truth to this?
