He kind of ruined it by adding "Spinoza's Rabbi". Afraid he wasn't going to find any buyers, so he tried to attract some Spinozists?

Boa semana. I am thinking about a project, which is to go around finding the few people left -if any- who grew up in lost communities such as Hamburg. But also the oldest generation from communities that still exist. I want to interview them, focusing mainly on two things:-Language (Typical words, expressions)-Food (Typical dishes, recipes, foods for holidays and special occasions)Any feedback is ...

This year, like the previous years, I plan on organising a S&P evening in the cabana. Because I'll only arrive to Jerusalem just before the holiday, and am there for just a week, I don't know if I will have time to prepare. So I think it will be a potluck. Just let me know if you'd like to attend.Boas entradas de Sabbá.

The Giornata Europea della Cultura Ebraica in Italy this year focuses on Jewish languages. While many events are about Yiddish -even though in Italy there certainly is no lack of local Jewish languages-, in Livorno they focus on Bagitto. Anyone care to join me on the 18th of september in this town with so much S&P history?

Does anyone have an e-mail address for Marius Heemstra? Or, alternatively, if anyone is connected to him on Facebook, can add him to this group?

Friend of mine with the last name Haaker thinks his family descend from Dutch Portuguese Jews. Any idea what the original family name might have been, if this is true?

Any idea what could be the story behind these "Sephardic graves" in Zierenberg? I haven't found any sign of Sephardic Jews in that area, the closest places with some Sephardic history would be Cologne and around Frankfurt and Hanau, and even there it's very little.

There is a type of cake that is found in different Sephardic communities, going by different names. In Amsterdam it was called "boole fliado" and in Surinam "fiadoe/fiade/fiyadu". What does that mean? I assume it's originally a Portuguese word. The dutch recipe I have uses "fliaar" as a verb in the recipe. "fliaar it [flattened pieces of dough] with warm butter 3 or 4 times...".

Another call for people to share S&P recipes. And I don't meant these generic "Sephardic" recipes one can find everywhere online. But really specific local recipes from S&P communities. For example I am looking for a recipe for the "Portugiesischen Kuchen" from Hamburg. The way they are described reminds me of the "jodenkoeken" that are famous in Holland (thin, flat, buttery, crumbly cookies), exc...

Del Sotto/Delmonte family of Amsterdam. Their ancestor who came from Portugal was known as Mendes Sotto (related to Sottomayor?). But where did the name Delmonte come from? Both are used in official documents, naming the same people sometimes Del Sotto and sometimes Delmonte. (At least one of them used Delmonte in translation as a Dutch business alias, "Van den Berg")

What's the deal with following or not following Iberian family name traditions in the S&P communities? There are families that have retained the same name combination since the 17th century, and others that have names that were very recently combined.

The Sephardic Jews of Johannesburg started to have seperate services in 1903. The Rhodesli Jews in S Africa arrived much later, possible these were S&P from London? Some London Sepharaddim were among the founders of the first synagogue in Capetown.

"It is absolutely certain that Sephardic Jews were originally in northeastern Tennessee. Eyewitness accounts from the late 1700s, such as those from Colonel John Tipton and Colonel John Sevier are reliable proof that during that era, there were still large numbers of Spanish or Portuguese speaking Jews in northeastern Tennessee."Never mind most of the article, but does anyone know where these acco...
