Could it be that it was really the -Chasidic- "Sfard" ritual? Everything I read about Wildwood says that the community was founded by East European Jews.

Synagogue of Shangarai Shamayim, Mobile, ALI am not sure if when this building was consecrated in 1858, the congregation still followed the Portuguese rite, but I think it did. Not all members agreed that the Portuguese rite should be followed, and in 1855 some members left to found another congregation, Dorshey Zedek. Only in 1859 the two reunited.

I found only three places where it is noted what the Portuguese rite has. Does that mean that the rest was all the same between the communities?

A lot of confusion between the Portuguese (de) Piza family and the Italian Da Pisa family.Da Pisa is an Italian banking family of Roman origin (originally Da Sinagoga) that took on the name Pisa while living in Pisa.De Piza is a Portuguese family with descendants in many of the Western Sephardic communities. But what is the origin of the name Piza? Is it possible that Jews from Pisa ended up in Por...

The family of Eleanor Septima Cohen was originally from Germany, but they were members of the S&P communities of Richmond, Charleston etc. The first services in Baltimore are said to have been S&P, and were held in the home of either the Cohen or the Etting family.

Any idea how the Meldola family got their name? It seems clear (?) that the origins of the family are in Spain, and even though in Mantova they seem to have been considered considered Italian, in other places they belonged to Sephardic communities. But there are extremely few records of a Jewish presence in Meldola, and I haven't seen any evidence that family members stayed there. Is it possible th...

Is Monseles an Iberian name? I thought it was, but I am not sure. It could also be from Monselice, Italy, where the Monselise family is from? The latter is written מונציליסי.

Is there a modern scholar who has done research on the Portuguese noble families in Belgium (and their possible Jewish roots)? For example the Lopez Gallo and Pardo families of Bruges.

Jacob Oslick,You mentioned different "spinoffs" of SI and MI. Some of them I know nothing about, like the one in Philadelphia in the 1850's, the "irregular Brooklyn minyan" and the "hybrid S&P" in Atlantic City. Could you tell us more?About Mekor Baruch, I need more info too. I know it was founded in 1988 by H Josua Toledano, and I have two addresses: 8 Merion Rd, and the Lower Merion Synagogue. W...

Bartolomeo de Cases was a Spanish Jew who was accused of vandalising icons in Florence in 1493.What is the origin of the name "de Cases"? I don't remember seeing it in other Sephardic communities. (Except for one in Safed)Looking for the name de Cases/Cazes, I only find (supposedly) Italian Jews in Italy, and non-Jews in France and Canada. Of course the name is not very search-friendly...

Where does the "De Mattos" part of his name come from? I didn't see it carried by either one of his parents, or his brother.

In the little Jewish community of Altwiedermus were several Portuguese families, prominent among them the Teixeira de Mattos del Mayo family. I haven't yet been able to find out what rite was used in the synagogue.
