...............................O RABINO DE ITAMARACÁ - 1635 ...............In 1683 the Spanish Sephardic poet, Daniel Levi de Barrios, speaks of the rabbi of Itamaracá, Jacob Lagarto, and informs us that Lagarto wrote a book of aphorisms. Coincidentally this is the same year that Lagarto's personal documents were being deposited in the library at Christ Church College, Oxford, where they remained ...

At last an image of Jacob Franco Lagarto's handwritten note of ownership from his copy of 'Shefa Tal' has come to the surface ! I suppose that when I tried to obtain a photograph, I was considered to be trying to punch above my weight ! LOL Please note, this image is not mine, and it is only being used for educational purposes, the red dots are to try to prevent it being copied, as several imag...

In 1683 the Spanish Sephardic poet, Daniel Levi de Barrios, speaks of the rabbi of Itamaracá, Jacob Lagarto, and informs us that Lagarto wrote a book of aphorisms.Barrios also tells us that there were two synagogues in Brazil ..... One in Recife headed by Aboab and Aguilar (1642)...... of the other he only says it had an "angelic" title, but more importantly he tells us that by 1640 it already had...

........................Christ Church, Oxford, England................... .It was in the library here that a codex was deposited in 1683, the manuscripts it contained had belonged to Rabbi Jacob Franco Lagarto,(died 1667) and it is thought that he wrote them in Amsterdam prior to his departure to Brazil where he led the Sephardic Congregation on the Island of Itamaracá (1634/5). The documents rema...

Information on the contents of the fourteen manuscripts of the codex (folder) of Rabbi Jacob Franco Lagarto, discovered in England after being unnoticed for more than 300 years. Lagarto led the Sefardi Congregation / Synagogue in Schkopstaad, today Vila Velha, on the Island of Itamaracá up to the Insurrection of Pernambuco, 1644/45, and the expulsion of the Dutch from Vila Velha in 1646. The congr...

I have an historical question on which I would greatly appreciate any ideas, advice or information....... Was the "miraculous" conception of Sampson ever used, or mentioned, as a contra-argument against the "divinity" of Jesus ? thanks, Chris.

Have any of the Carvalho family traced back to a Sebastian in Recife in the 1640s ? If so, I have some trivia for you.

This is more of historical than genealogical interest, although it might explain where some of the families disappeared to ! This text is by the french priest Du Tertre describing the arrival of the Dutch to the french caribbean islands, after their expulsion from Brazil in 1654 They were rejected for being 'heretics' by the jesuit priests of Martinique, but accepted in Guadeloupe, where they and ...

JODEN SAVANNE - JEWISH SAVANNAH - SURINAM This 17th century settlement on the Surinam River was created in large part by Sephardim from Brazil. There is a possibility that some of Itamaracá's Jewish Congregation moved here via Cayenne in 1645 when the Insurreção Pernambucana erupted.

This book "Shefa Tal" of 1612 was sold for 1,800 $US at auction in New York in January of 2016 ........ could it be the copy that 400 years ago belonged to the Rabbi of Vila Velha, Itamaracá and was in the collection of the deceased Yosef Goldman of Brooklyn ?

A bit of Sunday morning trivia that arose from my investigations of the "Pre-Nassau" sinagogue here in Itamaracá, Brazil. It's the description in the key of a map of the village from the period. c.1640. As it is just a few words I spent a couple of hours trying to decipher it ! ..... Orthography of 400 years ago was "flexible", so I've developed a technique using Google Translate and a proc...
