Hello again. I don't think there is a notary included in this 1710 ketubah, bu I was hoping someone could check. Benjamin de Aron Colaco and Rachel de Eliau Gaon. Thanks!https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/scans/334/5.2.6.3.1.8/start/20/limit/10/highlight/8

Hello everyone: I thought I had asked this question before, but apparently not. If I actually did, I apologize! I was hoping to find out whether the name of the groom's father was mentioned in this ketubah, and whether the groom was a widower. The notarial marriage contract does not appear to answer either question. Thanks.https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/scans/334/5.2.6.3.1.6/start/130...

Hello: I was hoping someone could take a look at this 1690 ketubah for Benjamin and Ribca Mendes da Costa. I would like to confirm that Benjamin's father is Mozes (and Ribca's father is Abraham), and see whether there is a notary listed. I believe the Notary is Tixerandet, who drafted a 31 Aug marriage contract for a Raphael and Rica Mendes da Costa. Thanks. https://archief.amsterdam/inventa...

Hello everyone. I was hoping someone could take a look at this ketubah and let me know if there is anything of genealogical importance (other than the names), such as a reference to a marriage contract. The couple is Ester de Guideon Henriquez and Joseph de Jacob Pereira de Paris. Thanks.https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/scans/334/5.2.6.3.1.1/start/160/limit/10/highlight/8

I was reviewing images of French ketubot on the National Library of Israel website and came across a 1763 marriage for David Rz Bernal and Judith Ferro (Cecil Roth used to own this ketubah). The ketubah refers to a marriage contract prepared by Notary Lartigue.Since the husband's family has appeared on this site, I tracked down the marriage contract and thought I would post both the ketubot and ...

Help! I have a very odd situation with two Bayonne notary prepared marriage contract that I hope one of our resident experts can assist with. According to the two attached marriage contract summaries, on 12 September 1681 Manuel de Robles married Sara de Casseres, and David de Robles married Rachel de Casseres. The text of the two contracts (link below) show that Manuel and David were brothers (...

Academia.org's system recommended these two articles that I thought I would pass on. I meant to post the older one a while ago. Although they deal with the use of early modern ciphertexts in Brazil (a subject that may not be on the top of everyone's list), you will see that Portuguese Jews in Dutch Brazil were involved, including HH Moses Raphael de Aguilar. Very interesting!

Hello everyone. Could I ask for assistance with a Ketubah once again? Jacob de David de Mordechay Pinto is marrying Ester de Isaac Jessurun. I was wondering with the bride's father was still alive and whether there is a notary. Thanks as always. https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/scans/334/5.2.6.3.1.10/start/40/limit/10/highlight/4

I was perusing the archives of the Dutch West Indies Company (the WIC) and came across this document from Curacao that was signed by several dozen people in 1757. Most of the signatories are Jewish, presumably merchants. I know the group likes signatures, so I thought I would post the pages. This is the link. If the list has been posted before, my apologies.https://dekok.xyz/htrsearch/browse?s...

I have another baptism of a former bayonnais jew that I hoping someone could help me with. It looks like in 1740 a Jacob de Robles, son of Abraham and Raquel de Robles of Bayonne, France, was baptized in Cartgena and took the baptismal name of Francisco. I am trying to see if he is related to a Robles family that I am researching, but I am not sure. Can we tell how old he is? Thanks so much!Th...

Hello everyone. I was hoping someone might be able to assist with this Spanish baptismal entry from the 18th century. The man being baptized was - formerly - a practicing Portuguese Jew in Bayonne, who was taking the baptismal name of Augustin. I was curious about the pictured language, including the priest’s comments regarding Judaism and whatnot, and the reference to Dax. The language is pro...

Hello everyone. I was recently struggling through the 1600 or scans for the Catholic parish of Saint-Étienne-Arrive-Labourd that covers St. Esprit, France, the Bayonne suburb where many Portuguese and Spanish New Christians lived (many later became Jews after 1723 if they didn't relocate before that). I put together some links to “navigate” the scans to assist in finding the places in the scans w...

Apologies for the long post! I know Amsterdam Beth Haim index cards have been discussed here at various times, but I cannot locate a clear answer to my question. I have attached four cards, one each for Daniel v Moses Oeb Brandao and his wife Sara Touro, and one each for for Moses v Daniel Oeb Brandao and his wife Ester v Abraham de Paz. Based on (a) the statement in Daniel's card that Daniel -...

I have a favor to ask. I have attached two ketubot, for a father and son I believe: Abraham Gutierrez de Paz (wife is Abigail Melendes) and Joseph de Paz (wife is a Nunes Nabarro) . Could someone take a look to see if a notary is mentioned, or any other useful info? I suspect no notary, but worth a shot...Thanks! This is a sort of companion to my previous post about the port of Bordeaux. I read about the following 18th and 19th century passenger lists from Bayonne in a really interesting book by economic historian, Pierre Force: Wealth and Disaster. The lists are found in the Archives Nationales d'outre-mer.These passenger lists record the embarkation and and disembarkation for passengers traveling to an...

Hello everyone. I read about these 18th century passport records for the Port of Bordeaux and thought I would pass the links. There is quite a bit of interesting information available for Sephardic Jews (or soon-to-be Jews). Sorry for the length of this post!Jews and Portuguese travelers needed an application signed by a syndic of the Portuguese Nation in order to board a ship. Historian Evelyn...

I was hoping someone might be able to assist me with 1734 ketubah for Jacob de Isaac Hiz. Jessurun and Abigael de Issac de Eliau Jessurun. The bride's father, I believe, is already deceased. Is there a notary? Thanks.https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/scans/334/5.2.6.3.1.12/start/50/limit/10/highlight/6

Apologies if these have been posted before, but I thought someone might be interested in these links to two 1755 notarial deeds from Bayonne, France. They appear to deal with the 1755 visit of the famous Rabbi Joseph Azulay of Hebron (the Hida) to Bayonne. The deeds mention a number of the leaders of the Bayonne community.http://earchives.le64.fr/archives-en-ligne/ark:/81221/r6519zf3z8nrbk/f60ht...

I was just able to listen to Ton Tielen's terrific Sephardic World presentation about the Dotar. There was a question about the PJC's loan program and pawn shop. In case no one answered that question and I understood it correctly, you can view the available files starting here PJC PA 334, #1001 through #1027 (this last file contains some pawn records). A few are newly digitized and I have asked...

I came across this 1768 receipt in a Bayonne notary collection. I thought it might be of interest. It looks like the receipt deals with a contribution the Hebron academies by the Cardose family. The Hebron emissaries appear to be Rabbi Isaac Levy and Rabbi Rabbi Haim Rahamim Bajayo (presumably of that leading rabbinic family).Love their signatures! http://earchives.le64.fr/archives-en-ligne/ark...

A few weeks ago Ton Tielen and David Mendoza included the first document below (from Bevis Marks) in a Sephardic World presentation. One of the signatories was a Jacob Ramos, who appears to have married a Simha Rodriquez in Amsterdam. The second document is their 1676 ketubah (link below). Would someone mind taking a look at the ketubah and see if there a notary listed? Thanks.https://archief....

Hello everyone. I recently came across this open access article from Brill:Counting Couples: "The Marriage Banns Registers of the City of Amsterdam, 1580–1810." Although it is not geared for genealogical research, I thought it might be interesting for some. It gives a simple, brief explanation of the development of the marriage process in Amsterdam that may help in the understanding of the vari...
