Hello everyone. I was hoping someone with better knowledge of the inner workings of the Amsterdam PJC could assist here. I have attached two images from 1718. The first image appears to show the admission of an Isaac Robles to the Sedaca rolls. The second image is a resolution permitting an Isaac Robles the mitzvah of carrying the Torah (thank you Noa Ramos). Assuming these are the same Isaa...
I have attached a Dotar petition for Simha, daughter of Jonatan Israel of Hamburg. The petition states that Jonatan is the son of "H" Moses of Hamburg. Simha entered the lottery in the 1690's (but perhaps earlier). Am I safe in assuming (at least initially) that this "H Moses" refers to Moses Israel, Haham of Hamburg (died 1673)? According to Studemund Haley's "Biographisches Lexikon der Hambu...
I recently read in Wieke Vink's book, Creole Jews (page 31), that Mosseh Robles de Medina and his family arrived in Suriname from Amsterdam on 27 Jun 1729. As I understand it, the Robles de Medinas quickly became a leading, if not the leading, Jewish family in Suriname. There are probably hundreds of notarial deeds in the Amsterdam notary collection that reflect the family's major business inter...
I obtained (and now attach) a copy of the English translation of the Will of HH Isaac Haim Abendana de Britto (died 1760). I thought it may of interest to the group. The original Dutch version can be found in the Notary collection Benjamin Pfaff. The Will refers to various other documents that are probably available online, Noa Ramos one of his daughters was married to an Abraham Lopes Laguna.
A little less than a year ago there was a fairly extensive discussion about the Touro (Fernandes/Rodrigues Vega) family of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Part of that discussion dealt with a Dota winner, Lea Touro, daughter of Samuel and Rachel Touro. Although she was related to Judah Touro and his son Abraham Touro in the 2nd and 3rd degrees, respectively, it was not clear where her parents (who seem...
I don't think I have seen this link posted before--If I am wrong, please accept my apologies! It is a link to the catalog for the LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE JEWS' CONGREGATION collection.
In the spirit of the recent posts about intra-community relations and communications, I recently came across these two 1743 notarial documents from Bayonne (Not. R. DuClerq). They appear to deal with an envoy from Jerusalem named Rabbi Abraham “Abenazer” collecting money ($1,500 livres). The documents are signed by two syndics of the Bayonne Community (Moseh Robles and Isaac Nunes Tavares). Var...
I found these youtube videos today and thought i would pass the links on. They are from a February conference sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida (Gainesville, Florida): JEWS AND THE AMERICAS ([http://www.latam.ufl.edu/media/latamufledu/event-images/annual-conference/Jews-and-the-Americas-Conference-Program.pdf](http://www.latam.ufl.edu/media/latamufledu...
Hello everyone. I hope that these two ketuboth have not been posted here before. They are both for David de Daniel Rodriguez (the 1st is for his marriage to Judith Rodrigues and the 2nd is for his marriage to Judith Rodrigues Carriao). Would someone mind reviewing these to see if there are notaries mentioned? I suspect not. Thanks as always!https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/inventaris/3...
Forgive me if someone has already posted this link, but this 1670 document from Amsterdam PJC looks quite interesting and includes several dozen signatures. https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/inventaris/334.nl.html#A23240000267
I thought I would post this link to a document from the Notary P. Padthuysen collection (from 1698). It deals with Dona Manuela Miranda, widow of Don Manuel Hierro Lopes de Castro, as well as Dona Leonor Hierro Lopes de Castro, Don Sebastian Cortisos, Don Joseph Manuel Cortisos (Marquis de Villa Flor), Sebastian Hierro Lopes de Castro (lord of Castleforte, and others). According this book, The N...
Hello. I believe this is the1683 ketubah for Moseh de Semuel Touro and Ribca Frances (Franco). I was hoping someone would be able to tell me whether there is a notary mentioned for a prenuptial agreement. Thanks as always!https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/inventaris/334.nl.html#PIGA00147000156
This brand new book, Religious Changes and Cultural Transformations in the Early Modern Western Sephardic Communities (Yosef Kaplan, ed.), is apparently available thru open access at brill.com https://brill.com/view/title/34860
Good afternoon. I was hoping someone could take a look at the attached ketubah for me. I would like to confirm that the couple is Samuel Delmonte and Rachel Baruch de Crasto. I believe the groom's father is Selomoh, and is deceased. Is there a pre-nuptial by chance? Thanks very much.https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/inventaris/334.nl.html#PIGA00160000124
Hello friends. I was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this odd situation (odd, at least to me) in which a widow seems to drop her father's surname as her maiden name and replaces it with her mother's maiden name. I thought surnames were a bit more fixed by this time. One 17 Oct 1698 Efraim Soares(z) signed his intention to marry Abigael Nunes de Almeida (upper left corner). Abiga...
Would someone mind taking a look at this ketubah and letting me know any family information or notary. I believe this the marriage of Daniel Rodriges(z) and Rachel de Aron De Aguilar, but I am not certain. Thanks
I have attached a 1903 article by Richard Gottheil (Belmonte scholar) entitled "The Jews and the Spanish Inquisition." It describes several cases from the Toledo Inquisition. Noa Ramos, Jarrett Ross and Jeremy Bliss may be interested in particular since the article includes excerpts and references to a Manuela Pimentel and a Manuel Pimentel, but I don't know whether the persons are the same as t...
Because of the continuing interest in HH Moseh Raphael de Aguilar and his family, I thought I would post the link to the 1694 marriage contract of his son Abraham and Sara Azulay. It comes from the Padthuysen Amsterdam Notarial collection.
Happy New Year everyone. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me whether there is any genealogically helpful information in the attached ketubah, particularly if there is a marriage contract in existence. Thanks very much. This is the link:
I was looking to borrow Jean Cavignac's great archival work "Dictionnaire du judaïsme bordelais aux xviiie et xixe siècles : biographies, généalogies, professions et institutions" through an interlibrary loan, and saw that his wikipedia page had a link to the Gironde Archive's digital copy. Very nice!
I thought I would pass on this piece of trivia about David de Aguilar, brother of H.H. Moshe Raph. de Aguilar. An important event in the history of the Portuguese Jewish Community of Amsterdam was the so-called “Del Sotto Affair” in the 1670’s, that grew out of the death of the wealthy Jacob Del Sotto, alias Del Monte. The facts of the affair were complex, and included a lost Will, the refusal o...
Hello everyone. Sorry for the long post. Several months ago Ton Tielen convincingly showed that HH Mos. Raph. de Aguilar (1) was the son of “Abraham,” not “Isaac” and (2) had a brother, David, who became a member of the Dotar. I have been wondering whether the Isaac that was discussed in the postings was another brother. The reason I think this is a possibility is based on two Dotar records and...
For Ton Tielen, Michael Waas and others who might be interested in the Zacuto family, I have attached this link to a page from the Dotar records. On page 256 (upper right) you will see that Judika, daughter of H. Moseh Zacutto of Venice entered the 1656 lottery. This Moseh Zacuto is likely the kabbalist. Judika bears a 3rd degree relationship with Abraham Zacuto, the son of the 23rd Dotar membe...
I was hoping one of our French-speakers might be able assist me with these two pages from an Amsterdam notarial document that relate to Isaac Robles and his first wife Rachel Robles, nee’ Dias. The document includes some paperwork in French (I am not sure if it is a translation of the dutch). It looks like the family was from St. Esprit/Bayonne, but I am not sure whether there is any other genea...
After taking a look through the Amsterdam Dotar records I thought I would post this sample Dotar “life cycle” for a 1711 Dotar entrant, Gracia Zacuto. Her father Issac was a Dotar member, holding Number 23. The original member #23 was Moses Zacuto, who died in 1623. I believe Ton Tielen said Moses was probably the brother of Abraham Zacuto Lusitano. In any event, it looks like this Isaac Zacuto ...
